Having almost got rid of all the leg scabs, now the weather's turned hideously wet again - what are the chances of the MF returning? As her legs are already soaked after a day out, I give a very quick whizz over with the hose in the evening to de-mud & check them, but I don't want to be hosing unecessarily, even if they are well oiled. I've treated with Hypocare, Keratex powder & plain pig oil... used to pig oil once a week but it was obviously not enough this year.. does it come back constantly? Should I just lather the pig oil on daily when she's not scabby? Any tips gratefully recieved!

The mud shield powder is good, and one person on our yard uses plain talc rubbed well in before they go out.

Well three things I have learned about MF recently are that:
1) It can be a secondary issue caused by poor lymph drainage, even if the legs aren't visibly swollen any pooling of lymph means there is reduced blood flow and therefore lowered ability to fight infection
2) Lymph drainage is ALWAYS worse when a horse is stabled. The lymph system is deisgned to work through movement and it simply cannot do that in a stable unless your horse is a box walker.
3) The lymph system also relies on healthy gut movement (peristalsis) which only happens when a horse has constant access to forage. So if your horse is stabled and doesn't still have hay left in the morning then their lymph system is not going to be working effienctly and therefore they will be even more predisposed to infection than those stabled with ad-lib forage.
I'm trying a new product my vet recommended called Mud Stop, if you google it you'll find the info on how it works and I've said more about it at the end of my cellulitis thread, but in a nutshell it appears to be helping Talin and I've only been using it for 2 days and it's cheap enough to use long term.

Yippeeeee!!! No scabs left tonight!! Thanks Michelle, I'll look into Mud Stop.... I'm awaiting a reply to a homeopathic seller about what the Rx are in their mud fever pills, and I'll look into that too. I'm thinking they must have a constitutional balancer in them plus one or two others, be interesting to delve into that one too. Meanwhile, I'll be more vigilant & just continue pig-oiling the babber's legs to within an inch of their life
