Am I strange because I miss mucking out? I miss having a horse in at night. Lady is out all year but I really miss the close contact you get with you horse if you keep them in at night. I bring Lady in each day but often she is wet so other than some in hand work (occassionally if its not too dark) I cant really do anything with her other than give some chaff and put her back out. I actually do kind of like mucking out and putting down a lush bed ready for them to come in.

;D I know what you mean! This is the first year mine have been out 24/7 and it feels like they have gone feral ;D they would much rather be with their mates than me! I know they are much happier, healthier (they have both lost their excess weight) and it is a darn sight easier for me. But I miss putting their PJ's on and tucking them up in bed.

I reckon I spend more quality time with Talin now he lives out, when I poo pick he comes to 'help' (he's not always terribly helpful but I don't tell him that!) and I invariably spend time just standing with him or watching him, when he was stabled I spent that time mucking out while he was out in the field oblivious ;D
MTA: must admit though I do know what you mean about the sense of satisfaction with making their bed all nice and clean and fluffy

YES !!! No, not really. Sunny comes in every night all year round and i totally understand about having a nice comfy bed ready for him when he comes in especially when its cold and blowing a gale outside.

I'm with you. This is the first winter in 30 odd years I've kept one out and, yes it's less labour intensive but I really do miss the mucking out/bringing in bits. hey ho

Michelle- Horses are never helpful when poo picking. lol. They are most distracting creatures. We don't poo pick where I am now. They harrow the ground and rotate fields with the sheep. I guess I miss out on that time with her.
We go out for walks at the weekend and I spent a long time brushing her tail last night which was nice. She always comes to call, often cantering across the field and then watches me from the gate when I turn her back out. She loves the attention too and I guess I feel a bit guilty sometimes. She is fine to lead in and out in the dark so I get her in everyday for a bit of a fuss and some chaff or some in hand work. She always seems to want a bit more.
The yard I kept Jack at had hay and straw included in the price so it was always lovely to put down a lovely bed with LOTS of hay stuffed into the nets. He wore rugs too so was always dry enough to groom.
