Have any of you ever had, or still have, your horse vaccinated against strangles as well as the flu/tet one?
Did you ever come up against strangles in your area and your horse was vaccinated? Did your horse catch it? Badly or just a little bit?
My pony is due her annual flu/tet soon and was wondering whether to add the strangles one to it.

My horse wasnt vacinated against strangles and caught it at schooling livery 4 yrs ago he didnt abscess up but was quite poorly and needed iron injections for anemia, insurance claim was IRO £1000 had him tested after to make sure he then wasnt a carrier Although its not a nice condition its rarely life threatening Didnt know you could get a vacine against it (is it the one in their lips?)

I didnt think it was available at the moment? think its still being trialled, i could be wrong. There are also varying strains of the bacteria so wouldnt imagine it would cover all of them,

I feel sure it was re-introduced early 2011 and yes, still in underside of lip.
I'll give the vets a ring and see what they say.

The vaccine is definitely back Cuffey I feel sure would object strongly to an injection in his lip, his risk is very small Do weigh up your risk factors eg regular changes of horses at yard, horses go out competing a lot, no quarantine at yard Sure it only lasts 6 months www.equine-strangles.co.uk/Disease_Control.asp
