P has had an oedema for weeks on the underside of his belly, we have had bloods taken (showing low protein levels), had his pooh and urine tested (all fine) and he went off to the vets on the 21st December for a rectal exam and for them to take fluids from around his tummy.
When I took him there the vet was concerned with all his lumps and bumps so wanted to take a biopsy which he did, he also did the rectal as planned and that was all clear. He didn't take the fluid but I thought he had good reason not to.
I then waited for the biopsy results to come back and they showed they were melanomas - which really annoyed me as P is a 15 year old grey, of course they're going to be melanomas, I thought the vet was testing to see if they were something else, something horrible.
Then the vet said he wanted P back in so he could take a sample of the fluid around his tummy (Again, I was annoyed he didn't do that whilst he was there, as they had planned to. I later found out he did try to do it but due to the oedema he was unable to, and needed to use an ultrasound machine). He also wanted to do a chest Xray to look for any masses causing the oedema. I was a bit stressed as the oedema was getting larger and we didn't seem to be doing anything rather than tests and waiting for the results. The vet suggested some medication which I started feeding him Friday 30th December, I'd noticed that the medication made his poops a bit firmer (as they got quite squitty) and reduced the oedema (horray I thought...)
Wednesday last week the vet was due to remove his staples so I popped home to find P in the middle of the field having an attack of colic!!! The vet turned up and gave him a relaxant and she put a tube up his nose (nothing came out) and gave him a rectal exam (all fine). I then asked for him to go to the vets for regular monitoring throughout the night.
Thursday they phoned saying P has Peritonitis, and he's now on some strong antibiotics. I thought the colic was from impaction as the medication seemed to affect his gut. He only had 2 poohs in his stable the night before - so I should have noticed something was up, I feel very guilty.
I went to visit P yesterday and his oedema was larger than it was a couple of days ago when he went and then I visited him this morning and the oedema is larger still, I'm really concerned. P is a lot brighter in himself and had a good munch on the grass and ate his breakfast (I had to take his chaff over).
I spoke to the vet who says that his temperature is coming down, his heartrate is back to normal and the oedema SHOULD now go down - I'm just concerned that he doesn't really seem like he knows what he's doing.
He said the oedema is not causing any problems but I cant stop worrying about my poor boy.
Do I speak to another vet at the same practise? Speak to a vet at another clinic?
