Even though we're only half way through our year of supporting Horseworld, it is time to think about which charity we're going to support next year.
In light of how immensely popular they were, being a small sanctuary who help both equines and humans, and that they really need the support, we're thinking about supporting Shy Lowen again.
I have had some other suggestions via PM and as ever there are so many worthy charities... so I thought I'd throw this open to see how people feel about supporting Shy Lowen... or if indeed the majority want to support an alternative?

I have put forward MArk Davis Injured Riders Fund as a suggestion - very worthy cause although they don't directly support horses in need in a way they do - if owners are incapacitated and can't see to their horses' needs. Without them I would have really been struggling this last few weeks, and I have set up a Standing Order so that they can support others in a similar fix. Or for a direct horse charity, Hope Pastures who found space and took in Molly when she needed them? They also have an educational programme I think?

I would be very happy to see Shy Lowen supported again. The documentary about them was incredibly moving - I really like the way they help disadvantaged teenagers as well as disadvantaged equines!

I'd have no objection to supporting Shy Lowen again, however as an alternative there is HACK in Wrexham. I've known Pam who runs it since she started over 20 years ago, They lease land on a country park from Wrexham council, and do a lot of work educating people, and especially children, in how best to behave around & look after horses. In October they lost their whole supply of hay to an arsonist! They are very active in the community as well as rescuing horses, they have a FB page and a website. www.facebook.com/groups/friendsofhackhorsesanctuary/www.hackonline.org.uk/hackframes.htm

I don't envy you having to choose another one Michelle. There are so many deserving charities out there and all are struggling at the moment. Congratulaions on your hard work this year btw, given that its so hard to raise money when money is tight.
I think its important to point out that any charity put forward for consideration needs to be a registered charity with a number from the charities commission x

Yes we heard that Lorraine, it's such a shame because we are desperately fund raising this year at the DPTC so that we can buy our own round pen and pay for own insurance so that we can run the feral foal handling course again this year down here on Dartmoor. Both very expensive lol! But we cannot afford to become a registered charity because the volunteers would then have to be covered by insurance....which we can't afford, a crazy catch 22!!!
For the record I think Shylowen are a wonderful charity and would put the money to great use!

What about Redwing in Aberdeen, they take all rescued horses for the rest of their natural lifes. They take horses that the WHW turn down, as I know from personal experience. I rescued one that both the Vet and WHW told me to put to sleep as he would never make anything and at 15Yr no one would be afford his keep. WRONG - redwing took him as I was struggling (Good deed done by me without too much thought!!)nursed him back to health, he is now one very happy chap popping small jumps and healthy but he won't be rehomed he is there in a now loving forever home. But I have no hesitation with whatever charity you choose, they are all in such need of support.

the problem is that all charities are having a tough time at the moment. perhaps it would be nice to try to help one that has not been the nominated charity for the year otherwise its a bit difficult i think to single one out to be helped again. (not that they all dont need & should have further help)

One of my mares is on loan from South West Equine Protection (SWEP). They were on Countryfile a few months back I believe. They are a wonderful charity, helping horses on the moors and surrounding areas, along with visiting local markets and pulling out any unfit for sale. I understand that they are quite regional, otherwise Shy Lowen sounds fantastic. But perhaps it would be good to support another charity - tricky!
