My friend went to her horses this morning and 1 was missing, she found him in the next field firmly stuck to the gate After trying to help him with friends they called the Fire brigade who broke down the gate and freed him. He was very happy to be freed and is sore and bruised but no injuries from the wire or rusty gate. She's currently watching him to make sure he's ok. How sweet of the big horse, to come and stand with him. Obviously knew he was distressed.

OMG! The mischief they get up to when left alone! Hope no serious damage and he makes a quick and speedy recovery

Why do people turn out horses in such dangerous conditions?

Wow what a lucky boy! Glad he has no serious injuries. I was paranoid about stuff like that happening - the amount of junk that was moved to try to make the fields safer was unreal!

Hopefully it is only bruising, he could have done all sorts of damage. Was he on his way out or was he trying to get back?

It's touching to see the field mate comforting him. Glad it ended well.

Another vote for the Fire and Rescue Service Animal Rescue Team then - excellent that they got him out safely.

Lucky horse. One of ours tried to jump a gate a few years back and ended up stuck on it with her hind legs tangled in the bars. Thankfully there were two big guys there who were able to lift her up a bit until the vet came as the pressure on her chest was stopping her breathing. The vet sedated her and the three of them managed to lift her off. She was uninjured except for minor bruising!

Why do people turn out horses in such dangerous conditions? excuse me...?? Yes the barbed wire needs to be removed but the main issue there for this particular incident was a gate... every one of my horses has had a gate of that height and i certainly wouldnt class that as dangerous conditions! That comment comes across as a very snide remark... not very constructive either might i add. mta perhaps you should have asked for clarification from the op about the fact the horse was found in the next field (ie perhaps not its own and therefore the barbed wire maybe wasnt seen as an issue!)

I do hope specialized's comment was tongue in cheek, who are we to judge other peoples enviroments?? You are, of course, assuming the next field he was found in was the pone's owner?? Anyway, thank Epona all was well and nothing bad happened and was a star the big horse was!

Not a snide comment, but a statement of disbelief. A gate with a hurdle tied to it, all wrapped in barbed wire is a safe environment for a horse? It is obvious looking at those photos that it is not an operational gate, but a tempting gap in the hedge that is not horse-proof.
All our stock fences have a line of electric 1m inside, all gateways are protected by electric fence to keep the horses off the gates - specifically to avoid this sort of situation. We run a livery yard and I consider it our responsibility to make the environment as safe as possible for our customers.
