Where Talin was kicked he had a cut on the side of his cannon (his own fault for being a little thug). On vets instructions I just kept it clean til it scabbed over and cold hosed his leg and as the swelling went down in a couple of days and it wasn't excessively hot I didn't get the vet out. I noticed the top half of the scab seemed really thick though.
Yesterday most of the scab came off when I very gently rubbed it and the skin underneath is healed. Today the top part of the scab came off (the thick bit) and it's left a 5p sized open area of proud flesh which looks all raw.
I looked on google and all I found was talk of the vet cutting it out, which seems a little extreme... has anyone dealt with this and should I see how it goes or is it a one way street?
Modified as I can't spell

aluspray will sort it, its just the best stuff i know of, however if its bad then the vet could get it beck to a fresh wound and then you keep it dry, and spray on the alu-spray

Thanks Jen, it's not bad, only a very small area, but after 3.5 weeks I'd have expected it to healed under the scab but there's no skin on the top part and it's sitting proud of the surface of the skin.
I've never encountered it before so wasn't sure what to do for the best!

i havent found anything yet that really gets rid of proud flesh other than copper sulphate from the vet or cutting it off and rebandaging. I normally cut it off myself now, there are no nerve endings in it and although it bleeds the horse doesnt feel anything. you could try scrubbing at it aswell, again, looks horrid but horse doesnt feel it.

Dermobion if you can find any, (its a green oily cream) works wonders on proud flesh but was removed from sale a few years ago.

It usually goes away of its own accord over time. Haemorrhoid cream is supposed to help!

Equi-Aid, fabulous stuff, can get a trial pot which goes on forever. Only stuff i know that is proven by seeing with my own eyes to actually get rid of proud flesh.

Eugh, thought it looked like it was healing (drying up at least) and I was going for the 'leave it alone' option but now he's knocked it and it's been bleeding again Where do you get copper sulphate from?

You need some Equaide - Lutine had three lots of proud flesh on her legs this summer after we got a new horse and there'd been some shenanigans (sp?), one of the bits of proud flesh was the size of a strawberry and bled like HELL whenever the bandage was changed. She was in bandages with various wound healing sprays and ointments for weeks and had to have one bit debrided too. But the Equaide healed the proud flesh up within 8 days. Even our vet was amazed and they've bought some for the surgery now. Tiny pot but lasts ages and ages and far cheaper than repeat vet visits, vet wrap and expensive ointments. www.equaide.com/
