I'm writing this off my phone so please excuse any grammar errors !
In the past, i've always used a farrier as my old horse was shod, but as Pete is barefoot and my farrier has too many clients to take us on (although has recommended another farrier who I'm waiting to hear back) I am debating a barefoot trimmer, but have no experience of using them in the past.
What are the main differences between a trimmer and a farrier? If I was to use a trimmer and Pete couldn't cope with barefoot is it then possible to use a farrier, or do the changes made to the foot mean it wouldn't be possible?
Also, does it generally affect insurance, should the worse happen and soundness investigations be needed, would it effect a claim?
One more Q, I'm based in Surrey/West Sussex any recommendations of a trimmer or indeed a farrier?
Sorry for all the idiot Qs but I'm nervous about making a wrong decision either way!

Ooh, I could rabbit on for days!! Basically there's a difference of opinion between most trimmers and farriers of how to trim a foot to balance it, IMO many farriers will either prepare a hoof for a shoe, or they'll give it a pasture trim, whereas timmers are all about getting a bare foot to perform without a shoe. That's done by trimming, but also by loking at diet and exercise too. Generally trimmers cost more, but they spend more time with you and provide more advice and support (that's not to say farriers won't, just it's not as often seen as part of the job). It shouldn't affect your insurance, but you could always ring them to check. I'd highly recommend my trimmer, Ash Harwood (07903 569421) he's been brilliant and understands IH methods. I'm sure he'd be happy to chat on the phone or come out and do a consultation without any obligation. Alternatively I used to use Giles Hayter (farrier) for my shod TB, he was lovely and took me seriously when I asked about going barefoot and was happy to do that, though I suspect he might not take on new barefoot clients as he was always very busy. I don't have his number anymore but he's based in Maresfield.

Sophie, I'm a DAEP based on Hants/Surrey borders but I have clients in West Sussex too. I'll drop you a PM. Most trimmers will do a free consultation so you can ask as many questions as you like and then can make an informed decision on the best way forward for you and your horse.
