I thought I would share the poem I wrote for my dog who I recently lost. I miss him so much
My Snoopy
My best friend, my shadow, my guardian, my boy,
120 quid for a bundle of joy,
2 years and 3 months with you in my life, day in and day out - it always felt right.
Monster, Pudding, Fruitcake and Ron, just some of the nicknames you took on,
Ronaldo, Ron-dog, Cheeky-Chap, you liked tuna and milk so I called you a cat!
Special-Boy suited you down to a t,
'cause you were so daft and extremely soppy,
There were so many names to sum you up, but Snoopy was the one that stuck.
Your soft brown eyes and your famed floppy ear, your growl and your bark which friends need not fear,
Your head on one side melted everyone’s heart, your big hefty tail which wagged from the start.
You were so gentle, you'd not hurt a fly, watch ants on the ground and planes in the sky,
Let moo moo run riot and take all the flack, she'd bite you wherever - you'd never strike back,
Play like a pup with your favourite toys - squeakies, teddies and play fights with boys,
But I don't think the postman saw it this way, or strangers who knocked - the price they would pay!
Through break-ups and illness you've stayed by my side, your soft brindle fur mopped the tears that I cried,
Two house moves, two yard moves and loads in between, you've always been there to accompany me,
You’d be at the door when I got home from work, if I left you with strangers you'd go berserk,
You'd show your affection by nibbling my skin, and sweet talk me when you wanted something,
You'd grab my arm to take me somewhere, usually the sweet cupboard – ‘twas never bare!
You'd give that cute look whilst resting your head, to ask for a seat on the couch or the bed,
You'd come to my bed in the small hours of morn, to check me and kiss me - I'd smile through my yawns,
Timed to perfection you'd beat the alarm, with lots of wet licks to my face and my arms.
Mistakes they were made in early days, but only 'cause you'd want me to stay,
Torn beds and cables, a hole in the floor, the worse that you did was chew Cat's backdoor!
Your first few trips to the yard were ordeals - you chased Harry the pony and ran off across fields,
Other than that it was just dirty paws, hair-covered carpets and mud splats up walls!
You lived for a frisbee, had 3 games a day - at the yard and the park, you loved to play,
I'd jingle my keys and you'd run to the door, slipping and sliding on laminate floor,
You'd cry with delight in the back of the truck, you loved to ride shotgun sat with me up front,
And when I'd start throwing you'd never give up, catching mid-air like a flyball pup!
You, me & Seamus - the three musketeers, we'd go hacking for miles with no worries or fears,
We've seen sun rise and sun sets, the full moon eclipse, been down town, to work and out on day trips,
You made lots of friends along your life's course – adults, kids, dogs, a ferret and horse,
And people would comment wherever we'd go, "what a lovely dog" when they didn't even know.
At the time when I bought you I'd lost my way, you put me on track, gave me reason to stay,
And now that I'm happy and hardships are gone, it's as though your work's done and you've had to move on,
We've had so much fun in a short space of time, I'm so glad I found you and you became mine,
I promised you it'd be us 'til the end, no matter what and we did it my friend,
But I had to make the worst choice of my life, I looked in your eyes and knew it was right,
You were still you and you played in the day, but nights grew hard - I could not let you fade.
So on Jan 28th we went for a hack, the three musketeers with the sun on our backs,
Then back to the yard for freshly cooked meat, surrounded by friends who dished out the treats,
A game of frisbee and flirting with Cin, chasing the quad bike and trying to win,
And when your time came you were so brave and calm, I covered your eyes whilst you laid in my arms,
You kept hold of your frisbee right to the end, made us smile through the tears - no need to pretend,
We laid you to rest in the field with Sea, favourite toys at your side, off to heaven to play.
I love you and miss you more than anyone will know, it's so unfair that you had to go,
But it's not about the years we have, it's what we do with our time and by god we kicked ass!
So two fingers up to the cancer you had, we beat it together before it got bad,
I'm honoured to have owned you, you brought me such joy,
My best friend, my shadow, my guardian, my boy.
