How terrifying! Your worst nightmare concerning dogs! In a way it's a shame the mare was trained not to kick hounds, a damn good belt from a horse might have stopped the dog doing so much damage. It doesn't say whether the dog owner tried to exert any control over the dog. Awful! Just imagine if it had been a child on a pony?

Owner should be ashamed of himself, how disgusting, some people dont even attempt to exert any control over their dogs. Poor lady and poor horse.

This happened to a friend of mne when riding on the Quantocks - sadly, the same type of dog. The dog attacked the horse's hindquarters and he needed extensive repairs. The horse was one of her NH racehorses who had a pretty decent record - he never raced again but spent the rest of his days nannying her youngstock. The owner bundled his dog into his car and disappeared. Unfortunately my friend and her groom were too busy trying to control the horses (they managed to stay on) to get his car number. Grrr!
I hope the poor horse and rider in Devon make a good and quick recovery.

God that's awful!
Molly and I were repeatedly chased by a dog oe hack last summer, the owner didn't bother calling it back.
I kept it at bay by turning Moll to face it and it never actually did anything but the last time it came at us it did snarl and snap so I yelled at it and swore a bit (a lot) and the owner had a go at ME!!!! Told me I was out of order for yelling at his dog.
I wasn't exactly polite in my response to him!

How awfu for them and how frightening. I've already written elsewhere about the dog attack my friend had recently - 2 GSDs leapt over a garden fence at them and although theye didn't attack the horses as in this case, both horses involved went down, got cut up and then bolted. Her old boy is still really poorly with stress laminitis but it might be a long haul for her to get any money out of the dog owners as how can you catagorically say it was the attack? Already they are muttering things like 'have you checked him for cushings (the dog owner also has horses)' but my friend is staring at a bill for at least £1000 and no insurance as he is 29.
