I don't think it is possible to ride and only use +R. In fact, I don't think it is possible to train a horse to do the sort of day to day stuff we want to do with it with +R only. As soon as we give a rein aid or a leg aid or a weight aid, that is -R. -R doesn't have to be unpleasant but it has to be sufficiently unpleasant for the horse to offer a change in behaviour. So, if you want your horse to go from walk to trot you apply a leg aid and remove it when the horse trots. That is -R. You could also add a word and click and treat the trot so eventually the horse will go off the word cue, but you still need -R to train it initially. With +R only you'd have to wait for the horse to happen to trot and then click and treat the trot. If you repeated that over and over again and added a word cue then I guess in theory you'd have a horse that learnt to trot purely from +R but I suspect it would take a very long time. Goodness knows how you'd teach shoulder in or half pass or anything else remotely complicated!
