Anyone with a Fell pony? He had a trace clip in autumn but it has grown out completely and he's getting very sweaty again. He has such a lot of hair I was thinking of clipping him out again.
Will it affect his summer coat to do it now? We had a show pony that we could clip in feb half term and he was fine!

You should be fine doing it now. The old doctrine was that you shouldn't clip after New Year but we have clipped through to the end of Feb with no issues. We are just about to reclip most of the yard this week. What with the bad weather we just left them hairy for a while but as we are working them again, at long last, they all need a clip badly.

Thanks hazelhorse, not only is he sweating but it took so long to get rid of his full coat last year that I can't face it this year! I'm allergic to horses and have the hairiest beast possible!!!

I am reassured! Watchout for a baldy fell! He always looks slimmer too!!

Until this xmas, i've always done my last clip end Feb or even beg Mar but this yr we want to catch the early showing shows so have done them already. All it means clipping later is that the lines take longer to disappear, doesn't actually affect the coat growing so to speak.

ah, all very interesting. He was huffing and puffing and sweaty after my 16 yr old rode him in the school properly tonight. Poor boy, he gets off lightly with me!

I will be clipping in the next week or two. I tend not to clip after the end of January, but as I don't show, I prefer a clipped and happier horse than one that is hairy and sweaty.

My boy (traditional coblet).. had a hunter clip again just after the NY (3rd one since September!!).... hopefully that should be it now!
I always get a last clip in before the end of Jan,... but to be perfectly honest,. i would rather have a happy clipped out horse to work through the winter rather than an uncomfortable sweaty one at the end of the work out... much healthier in my eyes too as long as you rug accordingly.. Amber x
