Whilst ordering The Nature of Horses by Stephen Budiansky (my curiosity was piqued by the recent thread on this book ) I came across several interesting- looking books by Marthe Kiley Worthington and wondered if any of the very learned DG'ers had read any of her work and what they thought of it? Cheers! xx

I love her book Horse Watch, what it is to be equine, although I have not read all of it so far.

my sons senco grew up in kenya with martha, i now sport a few of her first books that are signed, marthas natural horse confirmed what was always in my heart , my freind aka senco said she is mad as a brush , but thats where the sense comes from in her book, when writing and researching these books martha was about 40 years ahead of her time,

I read The Behaviour of Horses years ago and used it as a resource when I was doing my MRPCH. I found her ideas on pasture management new and interesting. Another odd-ball book from J A Allen that I like is The Undisciplined Horse by Ulrik Schramm - worth getting hold of if only for the pictures of how not to ride a horse.

She used to be a horse agony aunt on a magazine and I wrote to the mag once with a problem horse. She wrote back a personal letter which was very, very helpful. Understood the problem, gave the probable reasons and offered a solution, which worked. By the time I had the reply I had worked some of it out myself, but I wrote in when I was at my very lowest point. I dreaded going out in the field to fetch horse in out of the field.
So I give her the thumbs up, and as someone else says, was ahead of her time.

yes, would endorse her fully, it was probably her books which started me off on the 'alternative' horse bent. She was SO far ahead of her time, she was very 'off the wall' but boy, did she know her stuff! things may have moved on abit from the place where she was when she wrote them, but there is still lots of interesting stuff to be read in her books.

Animal welfare was one of the first equine books that i ever bought by marthe kiley worthington. Her horses are working farm animals and both times i have seen them at the arabian marathon they have looked very strong and able! I would definetely recommend her literature
