I have just read of another one on preloved, a 16.2 TB in late teens. What do the owners really think is going to happen if they are willing to give it to someone who, basically, has transport to take it away? I almost looked at a mule filly last week that was free and, if you could take it that day, you could have it but due to no trailer we didn't go. I would rather have G pts if things got so bad than palm him off to someone else to use and abuse. I am sure there are genuine takers but, in my opinion, its dealer fodder. So sad

My eyes have been opened recently, and yes the world we live in is a very sad place for our animals. People just don't seem to care, just palm their pets off to be somebody else's problem when they can no longer be bothered. I agree Gordo, I would sooner have mine PTS than be passed from pillar to post. Hopefully it will never come to that though.

Totally agree, it does make me sad.

I agree with all this. How many of them end up just driven from Sale to Sale or advertised on Facebook

I agree.................. but you do have to remember that euthenasia and disposal can cost over £300, and some people just may not be able to afford it.

Really poor little ponies were making £140 in Derby market on Saturday. My worry is that people see the free to a good home then make a quick profit, but there is that chance that they will land in the right place. Quick question on a follow up from Jill's point - PDSA treat sick or injured animals for people who can't afford the treatment do they provide a PTS service?

I understand that peoples situations change, but I do think there are too many people out there who buy horses they can't afford. Buying the horse and a saddle is just the start. I have wanted a horse since I was 10, and I could have got one when I started working at 22, but I waited another 5 years so that it wasn't a stretch to meet the basic living costs, and I have a contingency fund for vets fees - to me that's part and parcel of horse ownership. IMO If you can only just meet the basic care costs then actually you can't afford to buy a new horse.

The guy who owned the mule we were looking at said he also had a young girl interested but, due to her lack of experience, he would rather she went to us. But he was unwilling to help towards the transport so I imagine the young girl got her! Crazy
