I've just come home form sorting out my boy for the eve and am a happy bunny ;D as... He came over to be caught (has been doing this for over a yr now) Came in on his own to the barn without his companion sensibly (recent thing) Stood still for his physio exercises Went for a nice quiet walk in the dark (i held a lamp, quiet concrete track on our farm not a normal road) on his own in hand wearning his bridle (recent thing) And stood quietly to have his mane pulled and tidied up before bedtime Is this the same horse 2/3 yrs ago who.. Wouldn't be caught Wouldn't be tied up quietly without knocking me over and trampling me or breaking off Wouldn't leave his companion without rearing and napping Wouldn't tolerate his mane being pulled without rearing and breaking off and running away and i was the owner who used to drive home in tears from visiting my horse who didnt want anything to do with me or anyone else for that matter Thanks to my wonderful RA lizp who has given me so much support including moral suport when its all got too much in the past and also to my new oesteopath donna blinman who has helped my chap with his physical issues MTA He sounds like a baby but will be 9 this year, some horses with bad starts just take time

Wow Laura, what progress. ;D It isn't a little thing, it is a huge thing that you believed in him and with Liz, investigated every possibility for his behaviour, instead of judging him first. He is a very lucky boy. I am so glad you can enjoy your time together now.
this is just the start!!

Aw well done Laura, so happy things are moving forward. I longlined Nancy for the 1st time in a long time and she was a poppet (although I did have to lunge her 1st as she was a little rocket waiting to explode ;D). Once she expelled all her excess energy she was really responsive (not the switched off girl you saw) and was energetic and trotted when I asked blah blah, even went over a pole on the ground with energy!!! so yes, the little things ;D

Sorry, hijacked the thread a bit but Laura, I think your story is such a great example of IH thinking. Based on the premise that horses don't do anything without a reason and we, as the 'intelligent' ones should be looking for that reason(however hard/long it takes) if we want to change behaviour. I think you should write up your journey together for the Listening Post or something? So many people could be encouraged/inspired by your experience. What do you think?

This is a lovely post. I'm so pleased for you and your horse, you're both happier. Also, it made me think - I'm always wishing my horse was a "quieter" ride and your post made me have faith that one day he may be. Perhaps, more importantly it made me think about how very good he is in so many other ways that I just take for granted. Thanks for sharing x
