I discovered yesterday that my poor ol' horse Flynn, doesn't do the right hand side of the road. After two years of hacking on the left of even the smaller roads and tracks, he's so resistant to going on the right... this could be fun in an arena when I go on the left rein! We're working on it, but it's something I never considered!

start in the middle and work your way up to right, my pelvis is quite twisted at its worst i send horse out to the right with what must be my seat bones , maybe pivot your right seat bone back and your left down ,

Thanks Jen. Worked on it again today, and used my whip to lift his shoulder over to the right too, left leg back to keep his quarters over, and right seatbone back to free him to step to the right when he drifted, then letting him alone once straight, but God... hard work! I can lift his barrel with my heel going right but lifting him left.... a different story. He tried for me, but is clearly unnerved by the right hedgerow as I've been telling him to stay away from it!

I had similar problem two years ago. I was referred to the knowledge base at www.equinestudies.org and found it helped to understand and rectify.

You have the opposite problem to me kanga - Jos is right hand drive, so I spend all my time trying to get him to walk on the left hand side of the road! I feel your pain!!

what kind of lateral work sre you doing? lifting the right rein and right seat bone down might help, have a play and see what works, what he understands,

He's excellent at lateral work... he knows, he just doesn't want to go right on the road... much improved yesterday. He shoulders in and leg yields very well indeed. Very light.

I had the right hand drive problem with Bali when I first got her - she was imported from Hungary, so presumably thought I was trying to kill her when I suggested we should stick to the left. I think my right leg has strengthened considerably since then!

Oh bless him! You have reminded me of an issue I had with the wrong side of the road on Aubs, but with rather more terrifying results. I was with a couple of friends and went on a new hack which meant walking down a fast bendy road, but thats ok, one side has a lovely very very wide grass verge so we rode on that but towards the traffic, as soon as we did this Aubs started to go vertical (I'm serious, I dont think she knew how to do rears if they weren't vertical ) and lept forwards a body length, vertical and leap, vertical and leap (thank God the grass verge was as wide as it was - the poor drivers!) - I couldn't get my breath let alone anything else but I did manage to shout to my friends that I thought she had been bitten by a snake or something, I just couldn't think of why she was acting like this, and I couldn't get her to stop so I could get off, my friend shouted at me to turn Aub's head so she could see the traffic from her right eye, so I did. Clever friend!!! She immediately stopped rearing! She was just so good in traffic normally that it never even crossed my mind she would have a problem with being on the incorrect side of the road!! We jogged sideways the whole way until it was safe to cross back to the correct side - Jesus that horse used to test me!!! ;D Simple when you think about it though!! I doubt Flynn will do that, well, at least I hope not!! ;D

Auburnalia, you have made me feel in turn scared and lucky ;-) Poor aubs, I would never have thought of that scaring them, but of course it would! I am so glad Jos didn't decide to monkey about when we're on the 'wrong' side of the road. He has taken to going in the middle now, I suppose because he has been driven, but since we are mostly single track it doesn't matter much. He is good at slowing cars down mind!

Yes it was rather scary! She certainly taught me never to take anything for granted!! Bless her little cottons. She was just scared she always went vertical when she was scared or confused, (oh or when excited, oh or after long periods of box rest!) in time tho she learnt to trust me and rears were very much few and far between but i never did walk her on the right-hand side of the road again!! Ahh she really was a fab horse. Thanks for letting me re-live the memory kanga! Sorry i have no actual helpful advice!! lol
