Im looking into going on riding holiday of some kind this year and Pip's thread just made me think that I should ask all you wonderful people about your recommendations and experiences? I would be happy with Europe, USA, or maybe even a UK as a destination. Lesiurley riding or ranching would be good. Looking forward to hearing your experienes p.s post pics too if you have them!!

www.ridingportugal.comIt's amazing! Central Portugal, riding in the mountains, most of the land is used for logging so there's loads of tracks and stunning views. I went alone and when i booked Sandra told me they had another lady going alone on one of the weeks I enquired about so I went then and it was just us two and Sandra, we decided each day what we wanted to do. One day we went for a day ride up to the top of the mountain and had a picnic, the other days we did morning and afternoon rides back back home for a beautiful lunch cooked by Steve on the verandah in the sun! Couldn't recommend it highly enough

ooo just had a wee looky on the website and it looks good!
im going to TRY and persuade the boyf to come aswell.... and the fact that they are very relaxed about itinery etc. sounds great. I could organise a few shorter rides to take Matt along on (he isnt very experienced...) and then some long ones for just me and I could leave matt to go off exploring on his own!

Iceland :-) But I would class this more as a riding adventure than a leisurely stroll around the countryside. It was really amazing going on a multi-day ride where the spare horses are taken along in a free running herd. The whole attitude towards the horses is quite different. They are left to be horses, living pretty free in a herd on large pastures or even running semi-wild on the mountains for part of the year. It felt like borrowing the wings of a wild horse for a short time when you caught your horse from the herd to ride on for a few hours, before putting it back where it belongs: in the herd, running (more or less) free. I went with www.ishestar.is.

Vikki, Steve goes dirt biking so if your OH is into dirt biking or mountain biking he can go off and do that some of the time you're riding

America is good, men find riding like a cowboy more appealing! Look at Ranch Rider, they did us a great package. Careful of Texas, they only seem to walk there!

if your budget stretches to it there's nothing to beat game watching in Africa from the back of a horse....

My OH & I stayed with Sandra & Steve YEARS ago - must have been around 10? The house was gradually being converted. We stayed in their bedroom with an ensuite loo - ie portaloo in corner of the room. They stayed in their mobile home, and the outdoor eco-loo with a view to die for!! There was the beginnings of a shower-room and plumbed-in loo downstairs, and I am sure it's all been done beautifully now. Wonderful memories of the day rides - we swam in rivers and reservoirs in the lunch-breaks. Steve & my OH brought lovely picnics out to us and spent their mornings bird-watching. Then in the evening, we sat on the huge veranda overlooking the river, with plenty of vino. Wow, I had nearly forgotten about that trip. Gorgeous countryside, Sandra was absolutely lovely - friendly and professional. The pair of them worked so hard to make the holiday a great experience. Steve was king of the BBQ, and we would go to the town to buy the fresh fish every day...........

I've just booked myself on a riding holiday in the Lake District in May at the Murthwaite Green Trekking Centre. I chose it mostly for the scenery: Fell and Beach rides available. It sounds amazing - Cath, the owner, is training to be an RA, so it should be an IH-friendly kinda place. It's pretty good on the budget front too.

rj, sounds like they've stayed true to form as that sounds remarkably like my experience, except the holiday cottage is built, I shared it with another lady, I went in February and we had 20 ish degrees and sun in the day and chilly nights in front of the log burner Bliss!
