Hi wonder if anyone can give me some advice ... I have a lovely 15.1 mare .. had her a year... Boy does she have mood swings . This year has been a rough year, she came to me, then went to a friends as i was told I would never ride again... so she went to be sold . Specialist then said I will ride again but not till at least Easter 2011. Brought her and my other horse home ... A friend's friend asked if she could borrow my 15.1 to hunt and jump over the winter ..... so again the poor lass moved again...... She is on the move again .... coming back home ..... Things did not work out ...... she turned nasty and moody . very hard to catch and not at all happy.. ( She was moody before all the moves and she hates men) but I love her to bits Guys is this cause she dont know if she is coming or going .......?? She is coming home in a few weeks time and i know she will need time to settle back in ... What i was wondering is if I should maybe put her on some thing like moody mare etc or just let her settle again ... What supplement would people suggest if any ..... ( Hope this makes sense )

Hi devongirl I am pleased that you have the go ahead to ride again, not long till easter I think your girlie is probably a little unsettled from all the moves, so when she comes home it will be good that she can chill for a few months, maybe do some ground work for bonding and just spend time hanging out with her without asking anything of her If you think she may benefit from a mare supplement, try ringing malcom and equifeast he is very helpful on the phone and they do a supplement called mare essentials Have heard lots of good reports about equifeast supplements good luck www.equifeast.com/Home/Products/Mare_Essentials/mare_essentials.html

Hi I think it is probes because of all the moves she sounds like my friends horse although he is a gelding. When she got him it was from a dealer and he had recently come from Ireland and who knows how much he was moved around there!! when he got home he kept having huge mood swings one day placid as anything the next he kicked the saddler and bucked so much he couldn't be ridden she was told not to ride until he had been lunged so much he was exhausted she considered selling as not a very experienced rider wouldn't be tacked up without a fuss, neighed an kicked the door the whole time three months on and one happy settled horse and one happy rider who loves her horse to bits. The horse is only 5 btw!

I think I'd be tempted to give her a couple of months and see how she settles, after all those moves it'll take her a while to realise she's staying put this time, then if in a couple fo months she's still having big mood swings then look at possible supplements

;D
Thanks guys .... I thought most of the moods are because she has been moved pillar to post.
Before all this she does have a problem with men ...... My OH and my mates OH do spend time touching over the stable door with her when they are on the yard .......
But really not sure if she has been hit or beaten by a man which is why she has a problem ..........
Anyone heard of a mare not liking men before and if so what did they do to help the situation .....

My late mare was the moodiest of mares u could ever meet, didnt like men (and actually took a chunk out of step dads arm once he was only changing her rug!!) became more moody in summer and was absolutely horrible in season!! We put her on Oestress which showed amazing results! She suddenly wanted cuddles and no longer charged at us in a field. Your horse is likely suffering mostly from being unsettled, but it sounds she was also moody before the moves-particularly with men! would be worth a try IMO maybe would help the settling process for her!

IS this Abbey who is being a bit moody ? Our Suffolks prefer us woman to men too..(they only need an impatient farrier to tell them off, and they dislike men after that !)
I found that groundwork and letting them settle helps. Once they feel settled and more grounded, they come out of their shells a bit more.. Good luck and let us know how it goes. x x

Sky was always a grumpy old bag, she hated strangers and she hated change - perhaps its just that?

Could be worth trying some essential oils as your mare will be able to tell you by sniffing them whether she needs them or not. If you can find someone who is either an aromatherapist or who sells essential oils in direct sales - and there are a couple of companies that have sales agents that do that,- ask them to bring their oils for the mare to sniff and then if any are appropriate you can purchase them from that person. You will probably need the same oils as are recommended for women with hormonal issues, Clary Sage, Geranium, Rose, and maybe lavender. If you try supplements you have to buy them first, and if you put them in her feed she has to eat them whether they are right for her or not. pm me if you want more info.
