Does anyone know roughly what 1 slice of big bale hay is = to in smaller bales slices. The big bales are not the round ones by the way.
I cannot find my spring weight to check.
My boy gets usually gets about 6 small bale slices and I have been giving him 2 big bale slices

I varies a lot. We feed large square hay bales. At the moment, we have one with very thin slices, which weigh 5kg. The last set of bales had heavier slices, about 8kg. Since small hay bales also vary a lot in weight, I think you'd probably be best off buying another scale. They are only a few quid. I weigh out the hay every day, and I'm getting quite good at guessing weight :-)

To see what the equivalent is can you not fill a haynet with 6 small bale slices and then fill the same net with haylage? 2 whole slices off a big square bale is rather a lot, my horses generally get about 2/3 of a thickish slice to last them the night, or a whole slice if it is a thin one (depends on how thick the grass was when they were baling). The real indicator though is body weight - if they are putting weight on they are getting too much

Obviously it depends on how thick the slices are but I can get 6 slices of a small bale in a haynet, and the same haynet won't hold a full slice of a big bale, not even when it's a thin slice. My big bales are an odd shape though, about 4.5ft x 3ft x 6ft.
