Season's Greetings all. Anyone know if it's O.K. to feed soft spuds to horses in small quantities? We left a bag of spuds in the back of the car and they froze. They haven't gone "off" but they can't be peeled because they're soft. I know we used to get stock feed spuds but that was for cattle and sheep who have very different digestive systems and we do feed carrots and turnips and swedes to horses.

No, you shouldn't feed spuds to horses. There is something in them which is not suitable for horses although I've forgotten what it is.

never feed raw due to the solanine which is poisonous. cooking kills it, which is why us humans are still standing ;D it can also show up positive on a drug test for competing horses so beware. I know monkey world feed hot potatoes to their lot in cold weather so............. who knows.!!

They will also be chokablok with sugar. Starch in spuds converts to sugar, much the same as grass, when frozen. The sugar will still be there if you cook them, so be careful. I would boil them up and throw them to the birds!

good point about the starch/sugar! think the birds might be the better option lol! can you feed them to pigs? Might be some pigs that would scoff them up for you if they are allowed lol

Thanks everyone. No spuds for the horses then, not worth the risk. We'll boil them for the birds and watch jet-propelled black-birds doing acrobatic air displays instead! ;D
