I've had 3 horses now and all of them came from dealers, but they all had problems and werent advertised as havign them. So Im on the lookout for another horse and Im really nervous of being done again. Ive asked an instructor to come with me on 2nd visit as I have no horsey friends (well I did have at last yard but they fell like flies not wanting to bother after they came with me once) so anyway. I know what I want and have a long list of questions I ask on the phone but it still doesnt stop me feeling really worried that I'll end up with a horse that has problems. My measley budget wont help (3k to maybe 3.5k). I am an experienced rider and know what to look for physically and also ridden wise.

I wouldn't describe your budget as measly at all. If you can possibly get a trial or visit the horse at the yard it's at and ride it several times, that might help you decide. I have to ask, as you've had three problem horses is there any way your nerves or unrealistic expectations might be contributing to the problem? This was something I had to come to terms with when I almost sold my current horse.

well thats what I mean by my measly budget I think Im expecting a really decent horse for that budget. Yes I can be a bit nervy but once I know the horse isnt going to do anything I'll will trust him.

Hi Sunflower. We have a horse thats just been put up for sale on my yard in north brum. He is a hunter/show cob. I can vouch for what he is.. Let me know if you are interested. And you can come everyday to ride him if you are close enough?? If not can you find one thats for sale thru word of mouth? rather than going to dealers or off the net? there are a lot of good horses going cheap atm, but there are a lot of unscrupulous people out there too. Hope you find what you are looking for. C x

In this Market it's a very healthy budget. I'd be looking at horse around the 4k mark with a view to bringing them down to your budget - horses just aren't selling at the moment so most sellers would drop a bit in price. Good luck in your search - I'd maybe try the route of a private seller rather than a dealer x

agree - don't go to a dealer, I think they get horses people can't sell privately, so backgrounds can be hidden. not that private owners are as honest as they should be (I paid £4k for a horse with sweet itch rhat wasnt declared - but everything else was as described).

You have a very healthy budget there, OP! My darling boy was £1800, and I can't believe I got such a good pony for that! I did very much go on gut instinct though - I trust that more than anything. How about you give us a list here of what you want, and we can indulge ourselves in some serious horse hunting
