And laminitus still hits Portiabuzz's horse, Casper, has come down with laminitus, he is fed properly, and is certainly not overweight (both confirmed by the vet!) and yet he's been really poorly. Farrier thinks it was something he ate when the snow was thick that caused the attack because again he agrees the food he gets and the weight hes at there should have been no risk to him. We've all been really worried about him because he spent a long time lying in his stable and not getting up. I am pleased to report that he's doing much better, is able to walk again and is on his feet to greet anyone passing his stable. Still early days obviously but theres definitely marked improvements every day. What im really asking if for everyone to send some nice words to PB She absolutely loves Casper to pieces, and they truly are a great partnership!! She blames herself for him getting laminitus and feels she should have known. No matter how often i tell her she was doing everything she could, she still feels she SHOULD have done something different!! Maybe if we all club in together and tell her how wonderful a mum she is, she'll finally start to believe me

Oh PB, don't go beating yourself up Even the most careful people can be caught out and it's your first winter with him so you weren't to know how susceptible he is. Go onto Yahoo and search for the Metabolic Horse group, Jackie JA Taylor is really knowledgeable and helpful, tell her what advice your vet has given, exactly what you feed and your turnout regime and she'll no doubt be able to advise as to the best ways to help prevent a re-occurence

Oh no, I really hope he picks up soon. Whilst we all know that laminitis can be caused by inappropriate management, equally it can also strike horses who are perfectly looked after and who's owners do everything right and are very vigilant, so she shouldn't beat herself up.
Fingers crossed for Casper, I am sure he is getting excellent nursing.

Healing thoughts to Casper & hugs to you PB.
Don't be so hard on yourself, sometimes these things happen despite the best care & attention.

awww thanks HB & you guys...blushing lol! Have contacted Jackie, so await to hear her thoughts !
Spent the weekend crying, but am concentrating on getting him well again! Its been lovely to see him walking out to see the other horses & then being pleased to see me & OH when we arrive at the yard! It was truly scary to find him laying down as he was, it made me realise how much i love him, even though only had him 4 months!
Just need to get that cheeky glint back in his eye & he will be fully recovered !
Thank you HB, grinning now! xx

Sorry to hear that Portia, you mustn't beat yourself up about it. You're doing everything right and I'm sure he's on the mend now. Has he had it before? I seem to remember you said he'd had it with your uncle. Fingers crossed, and i'll send you a text. I have a grazing muzzle you can have if you want one xxxx

Sure it will have something to do with them digging at grass under the snow which had high sugars Lots of horses have ignored hay in the field and dug for grass instead--so it must have been tasty
My two unshod ones have been ''footy'' but the shod horse is fine

hi all, yes he had it in the past when he was overweight & thats why ive kept such a close on on his weight and thought i was doing well!
He was waiting at the door for me this morning and walked out on his own around the yard for abit, which is nice to see! Getting there slowly i think, just been a reminder that even if you are being careful it can still strike!
Thanks for the support xxxx Am sure Casper cant wait to get out again HB!

Oooo got to show off how clever he is too PB lol As he was slowly wandering round the stable block last night a new owner arrived and wanted to tie her horse up outside the stable where casper was resting (the fact she didnt til after id gone 20 mins later is a whole other matter lol) I managed to turn him around at which point he told me he needed to stand still and rest his feet for a while. so i told him i just needed him to walk to the purple bucket [which was outside his stable] and he could stop. Off he walks quite happily and stops at the purple bucket half way that i hadnt even noticed was there. He grumbled a little when i said it was the wrong bucket but he did carry on lol bless him. Who says horses are colour blind?!?!

I was chatting to my vet the other day when he came to vaccinate Reyes. He was commenting how often it's the owners who do everything by the book that get the problems, and the ones who fly by the seat of their pants sail through everything. I think sometimes, life's just like that!
Laminitis can strike even the most carefully managed horses, so don't be hard on yourself.
Here's hoping he makes a speedy recovery.
