We have the following problem and need to sort it quickly as the owner of the yard has the blue pipe ready to hit him.
our gelding has always been very attached to our mare but recently his behaviour has escalated and it is getting really dangerous at times to try and leave his stable when our mare is tied up outside. Several times now he has barged out of the door, twice trapping me as he barged out resulting in a very black and sore arm and once when my husband tried to close the stable door after a hack out and the mare was still out, giving him a cracked rib. We have started to school him back with the dually halter, tried to give him a lick when he has to be left on his own and gradually getting him used to the idea. The main problem is that although he can see the mare he will not stay in his stable. If there is another person around then fine, they can keep him back while you get out of the stable but if you are on your own you have to leave him to physically get out and it is at that time that he barges and by God he knows how to use his strength.
As well as keep schooling him to the dually I thought we could put a rope about a meter away from the stable door so that he has a barrier in front of him but can get close enough to look over and see the other horses but the handler can duck underneath and safely leave his stable.
Any ideas and other suggestions welcome as I really don't want him to hurt another person.

Is he a true gelding or is he showing rig behaviour?
