MRICH and Exmoor pony owner
Hi, I've just started using this forum and thought I'd better introduce myself.
Together with my husband, Nick, we have a small Exmoor pony herd (Holtball Exmoors - Herd 11) and our stallion standing at stud is the multi-champion, Hawkwell Versuvius 'Bear'. (You can see him as 'July' on this year's Dodson & Horrell calendar, and Google 'Hawkwell Versuvius' for his web page).
We have eight Exmoor ponies, six of whom were moor bred. We have socialised a number of 'wild' foals, including our stallion, and we back them and ride them on. We had our first foals last year and, particularly as they are living in ground, we don't hot brand. My husband comes from generations of Exmoor farmers and his ancestors founded three original Exmoor pony herds, which is why we have been able to start our new herd with the ancient Herd 11 number.
We also have three arab horses and they live in a herd environment with the non-breeding Exmoors - in a natural set-up that gives them free access from the pasture, to their corrall and into a large communal barn. The stallion lives with mares all year round and his youngstock (until weaning) in much the same set up and he has grown up to be sociable and ameniable.
We use positive, trust-based methods of horsemanship and I obtained my MRICH in 2003, after studying with Maya Horsey, who is now Monty's head instructor at Flag Is Up. Nick and I attended Monty's five day Special Clinic in USA in August last year and we work closely with Monty, Pat, Maya and his daughter Debbie to promote his work, and his new Equus Online University - through our website, www.equinetourism.co.uk.
Equinetourism.co.uk promotes equestrian activities UK and worldwide, with a commitment to good horsemanship and horse welfare. We have a directory of Monty Roberts Certified Instructors worldwide and a Monty Roberts editorial section, which is constantly evolving.
It has been great to get to know Kelly and IH through her work with Exmoor ponies and we look forward to helping to promote the work of IH through Equinetourism.co.uk.
IH members are very welcome to join our Equine Tourism Facebook page and promote their interests/work.
