Just thinking about the huge problems you guys seem to have with trailer theft in the UK. All our horse trailers (in fact, all trailers with a Max weight of over 750kg I think) have to be registered as separate vehicles here in France. So our horse trailer has its own log book, registration number etc and that's all linked to its unique chassis number and vehicle details on the French national vehicle database.
I know it could still get nicked and someone could put a false plate on it - but at least it's easier for the police to check it. Potential thieves wouldn't be getting a registration plate with exactly the same details registered to it (colour, type etc), so even one of those automatic license plate readers the police use could lead to them checking it out. And then it also could help if people were trying to leave a port...
I mean, cars would be so much more easy to nick if they didn't have registration plates and all their details stored on a database.
Just a thought.

Hi Wendy
I couldn't agree more, we have seprate insurances for trailers.
I know for the IFOR trailers, the partition is serialised, so if you remove it and stores it elsewhere and the box is stolen it can be traced once the new owner tries to replace the partition.

Certainly it would, but they don't change laws to make them sensible in UK. It's government policy for new laws to benefit the ruling party as much as possible and have least benefit to the populus as possible. Hence we can be fined for putting our refuse out in the wrong place, at the wrong time of day or in the wrong type of container, but a horse can be sold even if it hasn't got a passport. Not only did a registration plate in Austria mean you had paid your road tax, but like in France, that you had insurance. The best thing was that you could pay for one registration plate and use it on several cars. Our landlord had one that he used regularly on his Mercedes, in summer when he went for the occasional trip in his Porsche and when he came to do some work on the fields or woods, on his tractor. You paid the tax and insurance for the highest rated vehicle, in his case the Porsche, but you only paid it once for as many as you used one at a time. If you want laws that work for the people, live in a socialist country - as long as you remember that bureaucracy is a french word!

I wouldn't be surprised if some Government thought this up as a money raising idea. I don't think it would be all that popular though.

One good thing about owning a Fautras.. the plate is logged with the Fautras UK network which shows all history!

It would not help if trailers were registered.
