lol rosemaryhannah! Sounds like I am not alone.
It seems to have worked magic. Day 2 and after a wash, hair is still soft, shiney and knot-free - which is hard to achieve with bottom-length hair.
I need to dye the roots though - and am mindful of what Lady Equine said about potential issues with mane detangler versus hair dye. But I have to do it tonight - as we have a funeral to do tomorrow (OH is a priest). The undertaker once commented that he likes my black hair and that he can never see any roots (I had no idea undertakers pay attention to such things - particularly male ones!). So I can't turn up with dodgy roots now that I know it would get noticed.
Am doing a strand test to make sure I am not going to burn my hair off or turn it to bubblegum (which according to my hairdresser best mate can happen if you try and perm hair that has had Grecian2000 on! Not that I have of course - but it's a sobering thought to realise how far wrong these things can go...)

A hairdresser friend of mine warned me against using detangler on the horses, unless you are combing it regularly, as it can cause dreadlocks!! I have used it on my horses and after not having time to groom them for two weeks my mare has dreadlocks!! I am sure that you groom yours at least daily so you should be ok!!

Horse detangler is great for keeping rid of tangles and gives a good shine too

The hair colouring went ok - no obvious ill efects from the detangler a couple of days ago. Roots now black as a raven. Yay! Was able to do funeral with glossy, tangle-free black hair - and no-one noticed the suspicious likeness to my horses tail.
One thing I did notice though - the carpet that was around where I stood to spray the detangler in is super-slippy now. So I advise anyone else to spray it on outside or put newspaper down to stand on. Mane detangler and carpet is a bad combination!
