The winter finally got to me. I survived the chapped hands, the chapped lips and the hay on every bit of clothing. But today, something snapped. My very long straight hair, which is normally easy to care for, has become a rug of matted hair and hay. Every time I detangle it, it returns to rug-formation within a day or two. Detangling was making it static-charged and that made it re-tangle. I tried numerous conditioners and deep-conditioning treatments, but I had reached the stage where nothing was really doing the job. I was considering a major cut in fact.
So when I went to the tack and feed shop today, I was at my wits end. I got hit by inspiration in the room of lotions and potions - and came home with a mane detangler. If it works for horses, then surely it would work on me?
Well I tried it - and it was amazing! I can report beautifully detangled hair and a nice texture - shiny but thick. Can't believe I have been wasting money on all these human hair products for years!
I may have to report back in a day or two. Tis possible I am going to regret this. It's looking good so far though!

In the States, horse products like 'Mane 'n' Tail' are all the rage. That's a shampoo, but considering the level to which animal products like detangler have to be tested due to the sensitivity of horse's skin, I'll bet they are fairly safe. My hands are horrible right now, with ground in dirt, skinned knuckles and rough ancient looking skin. Delightful!

Because you're worth it, even when your horse isn't!

I use detangler, have done for a while now. Also use cowboy magic if I smell a bit (great for a freshen up of armpits in summer!)

Because you're worth it, even when your horse isn't! I think the reverse is the root of the problem...lol! It's such an operation to look after my 3 horses at the moment, I don't get time to look after myself!

Have you not tried Body shop hemp hand cream for your hands? It works like a barrier cream too.
I used to use a human leave in conditioner on the horses it was brilliant and it was about £1 per litre bottle on offer when I used to work in the chemist. I use body shop Bilberry Colour protect detangler when my hair is wet and that is the only time I brush my hair! I comb it together with my fingers and its long too.
People used to buy Lanolin cream for there hands in the chemist hey it works for sheep!

Yep, I used to use it all the time when my hair was long. It's brilliant isn't it?!
I don't need it now as my hair is short and layered so has a natural curl thing going on and doesn't get tangled like it used to ;D
Make time for yourself Caroline - you are just as important as the horses are
I will also vouch for the Body Shop Hemp handcream. It does wonders for dry skin, but I intensely disliked the smell for some reason

Ok, Hairdressers head on for 5 mins..
Caroline - The reason it woks in your hair is cos there's a panthenol - cellulose or a silicone based ingredient in the detangler... this unfortunately is a form of liquid plastic... over a long period of time the hair will become demoisturised as it's being coated. So short term yey, long term not so good for long hair. If you col your hair semi permanantly the col will slide off - permanantly your hair will only intake the natural base tone..I trained as a colour tech in the eighties/early nineties when 'wash & go & pantene were born, it was hell...!! Hair that 'LOOKS so healthy it shines...!! Good ole marketing...What it didn;t tell you was it was just laying a coating of liquid plastic on your hair for a false shine...!!
It sounds like you have fine hair??? ( I pull back into my memory bank...!!) I would look at Aveda or KMS both these professional items will add moisture and weight to the hair..
Right Hairdressers hat off..
Hope you are all well....
Happy New Year

Never thought of trying it but what a good idea!! Mind you I took the scissors to my hair a few weeks ago as it's totally unruly/frizzy!

I must have trailed my long hair over the dung barrow this morning as there was a distinctly agricultural smell in the library and it kept following me around... ehem.

Conversation on wedding morning.
Elder daughter: Don't you have any leave in conditioner? something to make your hair shine?
Younger horsey daughter: I've got show shine. It would do.
It did do and daughter had wonderfully glossy curls.
