Having never bought my own horse before I'm looking for some advice on vettings
1. What is the difference between a 2* and a 5* vetting?
2. Do you think a 2* would be ok for Indie, seeing as i've had her for a good month now and know she's not doped or alike and hopefully anything major leg or breathing or heart wise would have shown through the extensive hunting i've done on her?
3. What sort of costs am I looking at? I know vets charge different but I don't want to pay more than I should!
4. Will some vets do a 2* and then perhaps a bit more for an extra fee?
anything else I should know?

a basic 2* usually involves a physical examination of appearance, conformation, blemishes, scars, splints, windgalls, skin, ears, eyes, feet, listen to heart, lungs etc, followed by flexion tests and possibly trotting on circles. A usual 5* is all of the above plus watching whilst ridden and a listen to the heart, lungs after galloping and or strenuous exercise. You can then go on to include blood samples, x-rays and scans if you wish. Prices vary, depending on whats included so have a chat with your vet. Alot depends on what you want to do with your horse and what you are paying for him. Basically, the insurance company will want to know that he is 'fit for purpose' and a reasonable insurance risk. It is expensive, but worth every penny in my experience. I personally wouldn't buy a horse without at least a 2*, and a 5* if I wanted to compete. Good luck with your purchase!

I'm pretty confident about her heart and lungs especially after hunting her. I think I will go for the 2*. I know her well having had her on loan and seen her in the riding school, and just want a splint looked at really. She's already insured by me so insurance isn't a problem

Ella, if you chat with your vet they can look at exactly what you want them to look at, esp if insurance is not an issue. Splints are so common, they are not usually a problem except when they are forming, and blood test won't be necessary if you have had her on loan for a month. It should be around £100 to £150 for a 2* from a specialist equine vet.
