How sad is it that this is still considered normal and perfectly ok for day to day practise? This video made me want to cry, mostly because I grew up being taught that this was how things are done and told horses are tough they don't feel it, its now I realise how cruel it is and to think of the people who still believe its ok and will continue to practise and teach things this way. www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkxOp_xfVEg

would sooner watch second vid than the first...
but yes, i grew up in that time also... but with all the jumping comps at the place where you and i both worked at different times, i was told to smack horsy who wouldnt jump.... i refused saying i didnt want bucked off...lol.. then instructor says if horse bucks, hit some more until it stops.... would sooner get bucked off then i wouldnt have to hit.. but these days if someone was seen doing that in a ring they'd get disqualified for improper use of stick!

yep but i recon it will still be common to ride like this where we were Julz just at the start of the year i saw a girl on a pony (about 11 - 12yr old) just wandering along behind her friends going out a hack going smack, smack, smack every step not trying to go any faster, not using her legs just showing off!!!!

wandering around my local tack shop inbetween christmas and new year i noticed every `young person`(around 11-12 age) was carrying a pink or purple whip to the checkout, spending their christmas money?! this sort of accessory should not be encouraged, I would rather they spent the money on chocolate!! if they want to abuse something let them do it to themselves.

I have seen examples of the first vid too too often...working for an international showjumper I saw it every day! Second vid is lovely though!

Sadly that first video is just my impression of showjumping at local level, it did not surprise me at all. I hate going to shows where there is showjumping on within sight of the show rings as I can't stand to watch it. You can pick the jumping ponies/horses out as soon as they are brought off the wagons by their scrawny upside down necks. The kids all have whatever bit is the latest fashion (is it still the three ring nutcracker snaffle on the bottom ring?), a nice thin whip and spurs.

It has always been the 'done thing' to carry a whip and use it - to the extremes sometimes. I was ridiculed and laughed at because I plainly refused to carry one, there was just no need to in my eyes. I ended up leaving equine college because of those people (both teachers and students) but its good you posted the second vid. Shows that there is hope and intelligent people out there!

My horse was abused like this before I bought her from a 13yr. old would-be 'show-jumper'. Breeze as a head-shaker, striker, rearer, barger and puller when she first came. It has been quite a journey but after years of love and re-training she is now fine. It's such a pity that a young horse was almost completely ruined by a moron.

yes i too have seen the disgusting rider behaviour at local competitions and livery yards....and i have been told to behave this way but never done it myself, and as others have experienced, been ridiculed! Awful....thanks for second one xx
