How much should I ask for? I haven't got a clue. I've got a 14.2 working at Novice level aiming for elementary/Medium. 100% all ways, no vices, loves to jump etc etc . Only to be used for hacking and jumping/jumping lessons novice to experienced (schooling off limits unless it's Carl Hester for obvious reasons) The yard its self is BHS approved has 40 x 60 manege and barn stabling. Stable duties until summer (in at night) up to 2/3 days per week. I Haven't got a clue what to ask for I had a sharer last year but she was on a much cheaper yard so only asked for 10pw Am getting married in December 2010 and could do with the help as my purse takes a battering, either that or put her on full loan but the thought makes me miserable lol ! Thank you

depends where you are? Share's here in Surrey seem to all be around the £180/£200 per month mark, which is why I got my own on grass livery!

£20 a week plus the odd bag of carrots for 2/3 rides (1 weekend day and then 2 evenings if wanted!) I am on a DIY yard and like to muck out myself, holidays would be covered though if needed I suppose it would be a good idea to work out a percentage? My rough monthly costs not including extras or dentist/vet costs £100 livery £35 1/2 set of shoes £22 insurance Winter hay £39 Summer £6 = £22.50 average Feed & Supplements £26 Total = £235.50 a month so I get roughly 35% of his daily upkeep Also check out what locals are asking for.

portiabuzz - very true! A group lesson at the local riding school is either £18 or £22 for 45mins to an hour depending on the lesson/group, for our local fantastic Julia to come out then I am looking at £30 for the hour plus travel and that is with you own horse.. I suppose you have to weigh up the fact that a sharer wants a horse without the commitment and costs involved and also the ability of the horse in question and the costs/times available - what a minefield!

lol @ bhpride! You could go for £25-£30 depending on your area and how much time you are offering.. find the right person and I am sure you will sort something out to suit both of you The only other thing I insist on is the sharer to be a BHS gold member to cover themselves.

I'm in Sussex, near Gatwick and people here want £10-£15 per ride. The last horse I shared I paid £10 per ride with no stable duties and a weekend day but that was a very good deal (livery yard owner owned the horse and had loads of others to exercise!). I think £10 per ride including mucking out is reasonable as it's cheaper than lessons and they'll be riding a much nicer horse

I'm sure this is not the case, but the way you have phrased this sounds like you are in effect hiring the horse for £10 each time you ride it. If the livery yard owner was taking money from you each time you rode the horse then she may well be falling foul of the law, and it would certainly invalidate her insurance if you had an accident and she did not have a riding school licence or special dispensation from her local authority to hire out horses. As you are exercising the horses, you should actually be the one being paid, not the other way around.
We have two riders who come and help exercise our horses. They both carry their own insurance in case of accidents and they ride the horses for free.
A personal sharing arrangement between one owner and one sharer is a different thing altogether.

lisap, I part shared a horse with his owner, her owning the yard had nothing to do with our agreement. I only mentioned it to explain the reason I got a good deal was because she doesn't pay livery for him and rides all week so didn't mind me having a weekend day I said I paid £10 per ride because it was £130pcm with me riding 3 times a week which works out as £10 per ride. Pricing a share 'per ride' as I put it was just how the owners at that yard worked out the contribution they expected for a share.

Ours pay £125 and seem happy with that. They get 3 days, but we're all flexible and they do get use of trailer if they want it. We also pay for turnout on their weekday days and that's all included in the price. We worked out his cost per day based on every single yearly cost, including feed and teeth and things like that and then worked out the most sensible sounding monthly amount. we're on quite an expensive DIY yard though, it's about £195 a month.

Gosh i'm near Guildford in Surrey and can't believe the difference between gatwick and here! I guess alot of it comes from the livery, the fact that my GRASS LIVERY is £235/month probably equates to why sharing is £180 per month for most people! Sharers at our yard pay to share the riding school horses twice a week £200 a month.
