Is it true that Lead rein ponies should be under 12 hands.

Depends on the individual show, some specify pony height and childs age, others are more open so you'd have to check each schedule.
The majority of lead rein classes are 12.2 and under and child 10/11 and under.

For affiliated showing, lead rein ponies must be 122cm (12hh) or under but often this is stretched (eg to 12.2hh) at unafilliated shows. Obviously if you're not going to compete you can have any height of pony that suits!

We have done a fair few local shows over the last few years and on most schedules it says 12 or 12.2hh. Also, they almost all say 8 years and under for the rider, which I've always felt is asking a bit much cos mine had to be off lead at 8 and then cantering, eek!

Oh, that's a shame! We have just brought my teenage daughters pony back into work after waiting for my granddaughter to be old enough to do things with her. The pony is a Section B Welsh but she is a full height sect B at 13.2h. My granddaughter is 6 and doesn't look small on her. Never realised it was an issue. Abroad children often ride bigger ponies and horses.

Height isn't specified at all shows happyhacker, you're right, does seem a shame if the pony is good for her. Even if they don't do lead rein class (mine always found it a tad boring), they could still do hand pony and lead rein jumping and stuff. Shame not to pair them up if they are so well suited, a pony you know so well would be great.

I agree with sonicboy that you should be able to find plenty to do apart from lead rein classes. Best turned out, best rider, novelty classes etc will be open to your granddaughter on the lead rein and depending on the show you might be able to join m&m classes and veterans if your pony is old enough.

Just notice the show at Lloc says it does a Lead rein class for pony of any height. Will put that in the diary for her to aim for. I feel it's good for them to do their first outing with me alongside for reassurance more than anything.
