Wow....this is a quote straight from His website :
Dressage horses are my passion and define my life. This equation includes:
*Careful and thoughtful training of talented horses for the future
*Presentation of horses at competitions from young horse divisions to Grand Prix
One word comes to mind.....begins with a "H" ends with "ipocrit"....

This is soo sad that this way of riding seem to have become accepted today... I have been on a Swedish forum where there are several threads expressing anger and disgust at this way of riding, but we also need the FEI to step in and actively try to change things, otherwise I don't know how it will ever stop. It seesm to me that the sport of dressage seem to have a very distinct division, the ones that are following the more classical route and the competitive dressage.. I was at a competition at Patchetts not long ago, and there were several riders that rode their horses like this overbent, hard and forceful..then it was one lady that had her horse in a nice outline, the nose just in front ov the vertical, fab soft hands and it just loked nice and light...what was the comments from some people in the audience, "needs more oomph, needs to look more powerful, like the one over there (pointing to an overbent, struggling horse) " I just think most people dont know how a horse that are working in light contact with good balance is supposed to look like any longer

That's a really good point lovelylace. Maybe it could be compared with the fact that we don't know what a horse at a good weight in healthy condition looks like either. Showing has given us fat horses. Dressage has given us circus tricks. Very sad.

I agree LL and gill. I also think sometimes things become accepted without thought sometimes... it's just how it's done!

another aspect is of course the results in competitions...I know that there are many people that dont mind competing or have any interest in it..but many do...I do, I love competing and want to be as succesful as I possible can, and if riding correctly with light hands and the horse in a correct outline is not being rewarded by judges, more people will adapt the harder, more overbent look of riding...not saying I will but many will...
these top riders, and judges have got a responsibility to promote good correct riding. It seem awful that I now have to specify that I would like a "classically" trained dressage instructor, to avoid having someone coming and wanting me to saw my horses mouths...it shouldnt be a disticnction, good flatwork is good flatwork...but nowadays correct dressage seems to be almost a fad...calling it Baroque riding or classical..it's a shame

I think you're right, I'm lucky enough to have a horse that goes nicely on a light contact, and my instructor has told me the same thing, that I would be marked down for it in competition even though there's nothing wrong with it (she's not suggesting I do anything different either). Very sad.

I have had a reply from the FEI in response to my email...
Thank you very much for your email.
The FEI is aware of the video filmed by Epona.tv at the FEI World CupTM Dressage qualifier at Odense (DEN) and posted on YouTube. FEI’s main concern has always been and will always be the welfare of the horse. We are taking the issues raised in the video and in the comments made by members of the public on social media very seriously and have opened a full investigation. The conclusions of this investigation will be made public in due course.
Kind regards,
Malina Gueorguiev

is there any way of contacting Philippe Karl to try to get him onboard??
i was just having another flick thru his Twisted Truths of Modern Dressage last night and he does talk about the subject of overbending in international dressage & FEI rules, and physiological effects on the horse's musculoskeletal system in some detail...

That video made me so sad. Even though he wasn't being judged at that point, he knew that he was on public display during the warm-up, so he clearly felt that what he was doing was quite acceptable. It makes me fear for what happens in private... Another quote from his website: ' Seeing his horses with willing, expressive eyes is very important to this dressage rider. "Even if the morning didn't go so smoothly, you have to be fair and say to yourself with a new motivation: Today is going to be a great day!" Patrik Kittel wants his horses to be very sensitive to soft aids, he give quick impulses and expects a quick response in return. "If that doesn't work I give a stronger aid, the horse reacts and I praise him and continue riding with soft aids. The horse has to wait for the aids, or always be asking: "what should I do next?"'

another aspect is of course the results in competitions...I know that there are many people that dont mind competing or have any interest in it..but many do...I do, I love competing and want to be as succesful as I possible can, and if riding correctly with light hands and the horse in a correct outline is not being rewarded by judges, more people will adapt the harder, more overbent look of riding...not saying I will but many will... I this year qualified for a championship in dressage no nothing special and very low key.. I was over the moon.. but choose to not go to the championship compeition.. Why many will ask and many did.. Well I have been working hard with Flynn and now at last got another key to the door.. so I was left with a desision. I go and ride how we are at this moment.. more impulsion with soft but still moments rather then all of the time. Or I go in and ride for the juge and what they want to see to get higher marks. I know how we are riding in training will not get the marks.. I write dressage and know many of these judges. They are stuck in pulled in shapes, fast instead of impulsion, free walk on long rein is a horse normally that is held up all the time that when you let go of the reins their head drops to the floor and see as brilliant.. gets 8 plus! no.. that isnt a true free walk on a long rein. So what I am doing is what I know is right for us not the results of a compeition and judges. Many of the top riders are doing what has now become the norm! and worse acceptable. As they say if nothing changes it will remain as it is. The FEI owes it to the horses of the future and for dressage at these levels to get back the respect it should deserve.

susan, exactly my point...why is such bad riding being rewarded by placements and high marks? Such a shame that this is how things have become...
