I went to the doctor's this morning (he's very horsey, with 15 horses and eight kids!)... he told me that there were two accidents locally since the weekend.
A young racehorse was being hacked to our local gallops and fell and shattered its shoulder yesterday, and at a 'fun ride' on Sunday (go figure why that went ahead) a 60 year old man was thrown off and broke a few bones. His horse broke its cannon bone and was destroyed at the scene.
Simply not worth the risk if anyone is thinking about taking on icy roads.

FUN RIDE !!! in this weather ?? 8-)what a needless and tragic accident . Same with the racehorse if the gallops were frozen. Kanga is right, not worth the risk !

They have this woodchip 'bumper' course here, and I expect that was still being used even today with the temperature throughout the valley at -3 all day. Idiotic I agree. They'll be out hunting this weekend, no doubt.

Seems very daft to me, some parts of roads around here are ok, some are most definitely not, yards further on; even on the more popular roads round here. Our lane has not been gritted and is lethal. I have got wood fibre in my school, it is excellent stuff, but at the moment very treacherous indeed where the bits of wood have been wetted then frozen to make very slippery conditions.
Needles to say we are all disappointed about the weather, but wouldnt risk our horses trying to ride.

Shame the owners can't be prosecuted for their sheer recklessness and disregard for equine life. Utter madness and as usual it is the horse who suffers :-(

how stupid of the people to continue with the fun ride!!! i rode out yesterday for about 20 mins, but we have only had about a 1cm of snow by then and it was thawing and the roads were not icy, several days before that i did dare ride out it was way too slippy! and now its snowing no riding again for several days i suspect!

Why on earth would you even take your horse out in this weather?! Insanity - and the poor horses paid for it

been riding ours in the indoor school and have had a short walk out for a change of scenery but it was in deep snow only where there was no ice and the pony is an unshod native so very surefooted she didn't even slip a little. The only thing that worried her a little was stepping off the curb onto deep snow on the road and the bit where the snow changed to cleared ice free road and was a different colour. seemed to me to be a perspective change that was the problem she followed me once she realised I was standing on the bit she was worried about

We've been riding out round our polo field in the snow. Its been lovely and the horses have enjoyed it. We've only been walking though and there's no roads involved. Wouldn't risk it if there was any road work involved. Riding in the snow is beautiful. Our lot are barefoot and its amazing to see how the snow balls up and falls out of their hooves on every step. This was polo pony exercise on Sunday. Felt a bit like a riding school! Anyone who knows rj and jowithbenandschooner might spot them if they look closely! and 26 year old Cam looking after 9 year old Lara!

We rode out Sunday, straight up the verges into the woods, the only bit of road we touched was well gritted and defrosted, the woods were absolutely beautiful but no way would we venture anywhere else, the snow is glorious to ride in with ponies and we went bareback as well so if we did hit trouble we could jump off quick, also gives me an excuse to keep my bum warm - LOL
RIP poor horses xx

Where's the Horse sense gone! I won't risk moving mine out to the field if its icy let alone ride in it. I really can't belief people can be so silly.
