Hi Catrin, I'd like to ask how having whiskers stops horses poisoning themselves? It is 'mutilation of a sensory organ' as the horse cannot see what it is eating, so touch helps tell it which plants to avoid, as well as allowing the horse to sift through leaves to make an appropriate choice. When you watch horses eating in mixed pastures with lots of wild plants, you see the whiskers carefully propelling the horse to the food it needs. It always amazes me how they will choose a particular plant and only eat that one day, and on another day, avoid the plant totally and eat an adjoining leaf off a different plant. I suppose whiskers help stop the horse eating the wrong thing or too much of something that might give it colic. If they have whiskers, horses also prefer their food in piles in a large flat container, than mixed up in a bucket. I used to have a 20 ft long concrete cow feeding trough to feed my horses and they would eat a little and then move to another pile then back again after a while, if you put different food piles in it. Unless there were apples or carrots there, that is. The whiskers round the eye stop it getting poked when grazing hedges or tall plants too. Brilliant programme, will there be more?
