I've been looking into both of these, along with other methods such as hoof branding etc. I wondered what everyone thought about these anti theft methods?
I worry that with all of the methods available you have to FIND the horse first? Or am I overlooking that if the horse is sold it will be picked up? But then, do we have a good enough register etc to pick up freeze marks and chips when a horse is sold?
Your thoughts? Advice? xx

Some of mine are allegadly chipped, says so in the passport, but do you think I can find a reader to read them?
Freeze marking is by far the best deterrant.

Both would be best. Ours are freeze marked but we have two greys so you need to clip it to see it with the winter woolies. Hoof branding will grow out the theives just need a field for horsey for 12 months and he is unmarked.

We're freeze marked.. made the decision as it's a 'visible deterent', rather than a chip, which as has been said aren't always read at markets as they don't have the equipment to read them..

All ours are freezemarked because it is, as amber says, a visible deterrent that cannot be removed. From memory I think that Horsewatch say that 90% of all freeze-marked horses that are stolen are reunited with their owner.
We had both our horses and our three shetties done and they were all fine with the process. Farmkey or Freezemark are the people to speak to. You can even choose your own three letters so if you want a 'personalised numberplate' (as my OH called it) you can have it.

I know for a fact they dont scan for chips at Henley in Arden sale. They DO issue passports, thought passports were supposed to stop stolen horses being sold on? Not if you can take a horse to a sale and get him a passport on the day its not!!!!!!!!!!!

Well my little angel (!!!) is a tri coloured, her shoulder is red and her back is white - I think I'd prefer to have it done on her saddle area (which is white), but does it affect her because the scar tissue will just be skin? What about under saddle? Would it be better on the red area of her shoulder? xx

They dont do the bald marks on a horses back, you will need your girl done on her shoulder.

In Ireland, they are chipped when passported. It's the law.

Oh right thanks Linda, I didn't know that. So marking on their shoulder does that make a difference to anything? I know some people mention about it affecting them if you want to take them to a show? I would only really do show jumping with her anyway? x

All ours except the Shetland and the welsh b are marked on their shoulders. Years ago when freeze marking was still new i had a coloured cob, tri coloured not unlike you girl, he was marked on his shoulder and i won the midlands coloured championship with him, so no i don't think it makes a bit of difference Our old boy Jimmy has been marked since he was 4 or 5 and he is 25 now, he also used to do well in showing.

Skysythelimit, get her done on her shoulder, that way should she go missing or be stolen it is easily visible. If it was done under saddle the mark is hidden when ridden - you would know your horse but you would really want everyone available to see the FM. Personally now I think microchipping is a bit of a waste of time.
It shouldnt affect her when showing, but better to have your horse than not! xx

Probably the only time i would microchip is if i had a foal as they cant be freeze marked until they are a year old.
