Am interested to know which oil people feed and the reasons. Mine are on just vegetable oil, fed in differing quantities depending on the horse. Is corn oil/ soya oil a better alternative or is it just more expensive Thanks

I feed Linseed oil but if I'm honest I really only feed it to give her a lovely bloom to her coat and it really does seem to give her a super shiny look. I'm not sure if there are any health benefits associated with Linseed oil, I should really make the effort to find out! I understand that micronised linseed oil is even better but I just feed the bog standard oil in a bottle!

I feed linseed oil to help keep the weight on my 23 year old TB. He just has it during the winter months. It adds calories to his feed without using large quantities of hard feed that can't be digested in one meal, and was recommended by a nutritionist.

I feed vegetable oil from the supermarket to old Sabria who won't eat any hay, just for the calories really. She has four large buckets of fibre type stuff (chaff and beet pulp) with micronised barley each day, and is maintaining her weight well, despite the dreadful weather (she lives out under a mountain of rugs, she hates being in and stops eating altogether if she is). I just add a scientifically calculated "glug"(!!!) - how much do the rest of you add to each feed?

My mare is symptomatic of EPSM, so she gets:
100ml Olive oil (for it's omega 9) 10ml Almond oil (muscle tested positive for this, so she gets it) 100ml ish of vegetable oil
She only gets the vegetable oil when I think she needs a bit of a top up of energy, which has only happened since the grass dropped off. It's not a permanent addition but when she starts to get a bit hitchy behind when I pick her feet out, it's a pretty sure bet she needs more oil/less sugar.
Linseed and Soya oil have the best ratio of Omega 6 & 9 for decreasing inflammation so are the better options for arthritic horses if you're feeding to try and help joint issues, but unless you're feeding huge quantities any oil is pretty much ok.
If you feed 300ml of oil or more per day, it's probably a good idea to look into a Vit E & Selenium supplement as a high oil diet can cause these to not be processed as efficiently by the horse, so you need to feed more to balance it out.

I just add a scientifically calculated "glug"(!!!) - how much do the rest of you add to each feed? I'm not sure. I buy my oil from High Barns, and it comes with a pump dispenser which dispenses a measured quantity. During this really cold spell I am adding two squirts, but I usually only add one.

Just put Conn onto Flax Oil (pretty sure this is the same as Linseed Oil?) to help his mobility, it's meant ot be better than cod liver and it's vegetarian too!

Sunflower oil or sometimes veg oil, 250-300ml per day as part of an EPSM diet.
