SInce we moved Gordo to his present dwelling (14 months ago) he hs suffered abscesses. Now he has been BF for yonks now and never had them before so why would/should he develop them in the new field. Not stood in thick mud. Admittedly we have no concrete to stand on when he comes in for grooming but is this the only reason?? Not on mag anymore, another reason??

maybe he's fighting an ongoing infection, and it keeps releasing itself in the form of abcesses.. have you ever thought of having a course of acupuncture for him, to help him heal his body?

There may be different/more bacteria in the soil to those that he has built up an immunity.. another way to look it might be as Julz says to build up his immunity... echinacea might help.. you can use it topically on the foot (in a soaking solution) and or internally as a herbal supplement.

Is there boggy bits in the field? Like proper bog rather than just mud.
The only time I've ever had problems with abcesses in my barefooters is when they've been in fields with boggy bits.

Fine gravel getting into white line? Years ago bought a Welsh Sec A from local stud Had her a few weeks and she went lame--farrier dug into white line and removed gravel. Hoof had closed in over the gravel No further problems after poulticing the hole, but always had to watch she hadnt picked up any gravel in wet weather, gave in and shod her age 9 as work exceeded hoof growth PS we have gravel extraction in our valley

Right, grass is crap and so no worries there! Gravel nor a problem them as is boggy areas, just don't really have them! Most recent one burst out of back of heel - youch!! Have done the nappy, silage tape etc think but he goes straight thru the lot as he is such a big lad!! Have bought poultice boots too but straight thru! How much would the needle thing cost julz, ballpark figure? Could indeed be internal issue I guess. Having no bloody concrete doesn't help!!
