Can anyone tell me how to spot if it's lice? And do you treat the itchy area or the whole horse? Rafferty is scratching his neck and has removed most of his coat in patches so I'm not sure what is causing it. Do lice just simply appear from nowhere? Can some one tell me this too ? Storm is quite an itchy pone, and i was wondering the other day if mebbe he`s got some skin problem going on, but after reading this i suppose its another possibilty ? We just put the itchyness down to the supposed "bite marks" from another horse at his previous place. Where do you get Deosect from .... ? Do you do all of neddy, including face ? and does having lice leave odd baldy bits ? I was told these patches of missing fur were from being bitten by another horse she had, but after everything else i`m finding out over the last few days, i`m now not so sure, also told he has sweet itch on his tummy and under his chin but never in his mane and tail, is this possible ? ..... ! Thankyou ;D

Often they can be seen in the mane and the base of the tail they are tiny, pale brown and move. Look a bit like tiny moving bits of scurf. Usually they are fairly easy to spot BUT this time they were not ( I recon they were just extra stelthy fast ones!) Horsey was SWARMING with them - ugh I used a proprietory Louse powder Some say do from the ears along the back to the base of the tail.( where the blighters are normally found But this time I powdered all over right down to the coronet - the only bits I didn't do were the hair on the mane and tail I did all the crest and the dock.
When you apply the powder after a few minutes you can see the little darlings trying to make a run for it. If the horse has a rug - do that too.

Well, I have had a good look and can't see anything answering the decription of louse but I did find some typical "paintbrush" bits of fur coming off down his side. So I have treated him as if for rainscald ie washed the offending areas with Malaseb. This was tricky to arrange as the temperature has not risen up to zero for some days but yesterday we had a milder spell. Rafferty was not amused - drips of water trickling down him? No,no NO, it reminded him of the tickle of tiger paws LOL But I've just had a thought - I suppose he might have rainscald AND lice......... ......although there is no way he could be described as being in poor condition, anything but!
