Has anyone got any advice they can give me on steroid injections? Eddie has an arthritic change in his small pastern its the tiniest little thing so annoyin how lame it is makin him. Vet gave us the option of Cortisone but did talk about risks involved Has anyone had their horse injected with it? The other option is to ride once/twice a week and bute him before i ride. But im just not comfortable with doing that for one eddie will hate it he loves to work and a potter once a week will not be sufficient for him and the other is that the rest of the time he is goin to be sore cuz i cant bute him everyday. Im thinking of going along the lines of the injection just wondered if anyone had bin in a similar situation? Thank you in advance bumble

Is he shod or barefoot? Barefoot can result in bones remodelling and help some types of lameness. It isn't a cure all but is worth thinking about as one option. It also puts less stress on the joints as there is less concussion so is worth considering even if you go down the cortisone route.

We found out in April that our daughters pony has arthritis. He had steroid injections and I would say it has definitely made him more comfortable. He will never like schooling so he is only hacked and hard ground so we are always careful. We were told to give him, not bute the other one which I can't remember the name of, if he ever seemed uncomfortable and as yet we have never needed too. We also give him a supplement of glucosamine, sulphate and chondroitin which we get from the vets its not cheep but worth it. My sister takes the same thing for her joints. She use to get it from the health food shop but now from the doctors as they are a stronger dose, which you have to watch when buying for your horse.

Only thing I really know about steroid injections is that they can induce laminitis if the horse has any predisposition to it.
Can I ask why bute every day is not an option? My mare has arthritis & gets 1/2 a danilon everyday which although not a lot, makes a huge difference to her quality of life.

I can only talk of mine which I was told was a 60-40% of working, I was the 40% that it didnt work for. Then I met a Chiro ( actually June put me in touch with her ) who told me you are not supposed to have more then 3 in a lifetime as they cause damage to tissue.. I then tried these really good magnets she recommended not bioforce but much stronger and I have virtually been pain free since using them. If I get a bit of an issue I pop the magnet back on and I get freedom of pain and full mobility. I have CTS which was becoming extremely debilitating and the pain kept me awake and I could not even hold a brush to groom or tack up or pick up feet when it was bad.It even helps my arthuritus. That is my own experience and horses have the same system basically to us. I would suggest looking at Junes suggestion and even consider the magnets I used. If you choose to want to know more PM me. Good Luck with your decision

Thanks for all you advice
Eddie is shod and gets terribly sore if he hasnt shoes on so barefoot not an option for him. Before we had him the ppl didnt have him shod or trimmed at all for like over 3 years his feet were awful and now they are very weak.
I dont like feeding bute because it can cause liver damage if too much and also eddie is a bugger he will just not eat it!!! Weve tried hiding it in everythin and he wont eat his tea :/
Im goin to buy some magnet boot things for him and hes on a suplement that is very expensive but hopefully will work.
Hes having the steroid injection 2moro we are goin to try it once and see how he goes on it
Thank you and please keep ur fingers crossed for me bumble xx
