I have a stallion and two preggie mares living out full time and they are walking very gingerly around today. We are probably about as cold as it gets up here and the ground is like rock and has been for a few days.

We have a menage, but I'd walk out in the cold, frosty weather if we didn't. Probs wouldn't trot but Conn needs all the excercise he can get. I don't see a prob with walking, but would understand if you didn't want to.

It depends on the conditions hard ground is no different than tarmac roads for hardness so long as it is not all rough and jagged, so I would do walk work but no trotting or cantering if it was not too slippery. TBH I tend to go out in hand or on the long lines in this weather in case he slips, as it means I can see how slippery the ground is more easily.

We can't ride on the lanes around our yard when it's this cold. They're dreadfully icey. And it's frequently black ice so you don't know until you're on it.
We do have a school, but that's solid too. Mind you, people are choosing to lunge their horses in there - at speed - which seems a bit stupid to me.
Me? I rode Lui this morning around the farm, at walk. The ground is hard, but then so is their field so I'm not asking him to do anything he wouldn't be doing in the field anyway.
I won't ride Kira when it's this cold though. She's only 4, only been backed this year, less used to a rider and less 'balanced' then Lui, so I'm not risking her slipping in the yard or on the frozen grass. Mind you, she's still happy to charge around the field at full tilt!

I've managed to ride mine through all this horrid freezing weather, we've been out on hacks on the lanes and to be honest most the roads are perfectly fine, there has been the odd patch of ice, but not right the way across the road, so have been able to get around it. We are lucky that are school doesn't really freeze over, by the time you've warmed up in walk its loosend off lovely to go up a gear. Mind you she is rather fresh in this freezing weather
