Went up the farm yesterday and the ground was like concrete as frozen so i told my children they couldd not ride. It is the same today if not worse. Am i being a meany? I have no menage for them to ride in so has to be in field or round farmers farm.
Do you ride when ground is so hard?

The only riding I have done in this weather is on the roads if they are not slippy. No way would the pony enjoy riding on jagged concrete, which is what the ground turns into. Nationwide it is supposed to be frozen tonight, depending on where you are from -1 to -5! So tomorrow will be the same, my ponies are enjoying being turned out on my summer grazing every day at the moment, a rare treat at this time of year. Every cloud and all that.

We don't ride in these conditions. School is frozen solid and everywhere else is too slippy. There's always another day.

I'd go out on the roads if they weren't frozen , but the lane from the yard is solid ice this morning so no chance of riding today. Just as well as I'm stuck at work today

Not when there's likely to be ice on the roads and our school is frozen. We have no off road hacking on the yard.

Yes. With an 80km ER at the end of March, I need to get her out. Whilst I've been off work I've been boxing out to a spot where there are lots of DEFRA headlands that don't get too frozen (and if they are, they're not rutted and nasty) and no icy roads to trouble us. We've not done much more than a few gentle trots and canters where the ground is soft. But at least we've got out.

No I do not let my daughter ride on hard ground in winter or summer. She can hack if the roads aren't icy but thats all. In summer if the ground is baked hard she is only allowed to hack.

No. Don't ride if the ground's frozen/if it's too windy/too rainy. At the end of the day I'm the one who has full and total responsibilility for my horses and I can hardly do anything about that if I'm suffering from a broken limb ;D

I would have been safer riding today than walking down the stairs I think - slipped halfway down while carrying two bags, fell to the bottom, twisted my ankle and am now hobbling round nicely! OH said he heard me shout "Ouch" (yes, that really was all I yelled!) but didn't think anything of it I think I'm safer on the back of one of the horses than on my own feet!

We were on the ball this time and harrowed the arena before the freeze so thankfully it is soft and useable. The last freeze caught us out and the arena was frozen for two days.
