It is sooo cold at the moment. I love this weather, cold rather than rain anytime. Although could not ride today as too frozen. As a teacher two weeks off work and sons new pony arrived so spending alot of time with horses and it been dry every day. horses live out with rugs one has a thick rug and neck cover as she only arrived xmas day and has a blanket clip and been living in. I will take the camera up in the morning. Do you like this weather? how do you cope? any pics?

I rather have this then rain any day and poopicking is easier and wheelbarrow goes across the field easy peasy.. and it seems lighter then when it is so wet.. I dont get stuck walking across the field. I can ride still if we take it steady if we keep to grass routes or the roads are ice free. In fact it is rather brain clearing.. as I am sure most of us have al weather gear and clothes to handle the cold..thermals and layers.. I even put on over trousers so my thighs dont get cold and a lovely polar buff around my neck.. good gloves and thermal insoles what more can one want. I am also using this weather to help keep Flynns weight off. He is out in simply a mac as his clip has grown out and then when clipper again only the med weight as I have kept him out 24/7 and haying field for extra..

I love it too, the cold is invigourating and much better than the wet weather we've had recently. The mud in the fields is hard , so the horses come in cleaner, no legs to hose down, the hay in the field doesn't get all trodden in , and the outdoor rugs aren't heavy and sodden to remove. I walk to the yard and its nice to see everything crisp and frosty , and I don't have to worry about slipping in the mud and getting soaked before I've even started to see to the neds !

Welll..... I'd like it to get a little warmer... Jake is looking like a shire foal at the moment, he is SO fluffly - he's normally hogged, but it's sticking up like a baby horse's mane. I really want to get him all tidied up, but it would just be too mean to do it while it's so cold.

I must seem very mean then jakeand barnessmum... with Flynn only in a mac! no filling as clip nearly grown out and this week when I do his full clip again he will go back out in med weight only.. althought I dont like higged manes but that is personal thing with me. But after weightbridge last year I am not risking that weight over load again for him.. roll on spring days and DRY ones.. though I must admit.. but then it will be muzzle time and more worries.

No, Susan, I don't think you're mean.... I know you have your boy's best interests at heart, and I'm sure he's fine.
Regarding the hair style, Jake was hogged (higged, lol!) when I got him, and I do think it suits him, but I don't know if I'd have had the guts to do it myself if I'd got him hairy!!!
I do tend to molly coddle him a little - he had a virus or endotoxin (vets never got to the bottom of it) in early 2007, and twice in 10 days I thought I might lose him - he took over a year to get back to holding his weight like he used to. He's not overly food orientated (for a big lad), and I do have to watch him carefully to make sure he's not losing too much. It can be hard to judge with our big boys, though, can't it??? He averages between 580kg and 620kg on the weigh tape - he went down to 565 when he was ill, and recently (2 weeks ago) was just 580, so I've upped his feed a little bit. I do like to try and keep him warm.

It is everso cold! Everywhere was frozen today by 6pm! I have bought little starsky a cute heavy weight stable because he only had a lightweight and a fleece before, so he's all snuggly warm now Conn's got a fleece under his med weight stable (the WB Jasper Standard); he might have been ok in just the Jasper but it's quite a sudden change and I always think that standing round not moving much in the stable must surely not be very warm, plus he's at a nice weight now so less worries there. During the day he's still in a med weight, hardly ever need to bring out the heavy really - if he's moving around he's gonna be a lot warmer. I do love this weather though, I'd rather it be definitely winter and have hard ground and lovely frosty mornings than wet miserable not quite winter weather!

I much prefer this weather aside from the frozen tap, frozen for 2 days now and no chance of it thawing either looking at the weather forecast, the pipe isn't deep enough and runs under 14 acres of rock solid ground......
So lugging containers of water around is so not fun but a small price to pay for crisp winter days.

Normally I'd prefer this cold to the rain, but at the moment I have a really bad chest infection and am housebound. I tried to go out for just a few minutes yesterday and was choking almost immedately as the cold air went to my chest.
Though I don't suppose the damp of a rainy day would be much better for me!
I'm so bored!

I must admit I rather like the cold crisp weather, and would love it if it weren't for frozen taps and frozen fingers for the first few minutes. Not been able to ride much at all due to flu/family/work but really enjoying the frosty mornings, everything is so beautiful!

Lovely weather but too slippy to ride out around here, although I could use the school. Just fetched my new loan pony this morning! He has been out in deep mud so has frozen clay all under his belly, up his legs, his tail is frozen solid with mud! Attempted to chip some of it off but I will have to wait untill it thaws out. Not his owner's fault I hasten to add as he has been kept with a friend of hers.

I would normally say that I like this weather but I went for a ride today and it was so frozen I was worried about my horse's legs on the lumpy bumpy frozen ground. The fields are also incredibly rutted and so worry about her when she's turned out too!
I do prefer it to be like proper winter though than damp and mild & the countryside looks lovely in this weather.
