My pony has got loads of very small scabby lumps over his shoulders and a few bigger ones where the front of his head meets his mane. The vet's not sure what it is and as I have only had him about a month I'm not sure if any of it was there when I got him. His coat is thick and as it has been so cold I usually wear gloves when giving him a rub so may not have noticed them. Any ideas would be gratefully received.

These lumpy type things are often a mystery. We've got a couple with them this year. The vet thinks one is dermatitis that is slightly infected and has given me Imaverol to treat it and advised leaving the horse without his rug on and stabled, and with the worst patch clipped. Thankfully its been mild so I've just turned him out without a rug. It seems to be improving.
The other horse had little scaby lumps last year and again this year. Hers are a mystery. They seem to come with the winter coat. We've given her a belly clip this year and that has helped, so it could be something to do with her getting too warm. She does grow a very thick winter coat but she lives out so it doesn't feel fair to leave her rugless. They are itchy but otherwise don't cause her any problems. I treat them with Betadine ointment if there is any sign that any of them are getting infected or sore. She gets them mostly on her sides and shoulders.

Thankyou for that June - sounds very similar. Will try those things . As you say they don't seem to cause any other problems but it would be nice to know what it is.

Let me know if you find out. I've been wracking my brains for the last couple of years over them!

Bailey had lice when I got him, he was treated fror them and left with loads of scabby little lumps where they had been. They cleared up over the summer when he had his summer coat, but you could see where the worst had been as it raised his hair and made a slight tuft.
Happy Christmas!
