Hi there, just wondering if anybody knows anybody from a racing/competition yard etc... or anywhere that is likely to keep their horses in 24/7. And if you know these people (or have any suggestions) then would they be likely to complete a minute long questionnaire for my psychology project for each/any horse. I'm completing a project investigating turnout and its effect on horses and am pulling up some great results. I've now had 332 samples completed for my psychology project (see link for original thread: ihdg.proboards91.com/index.cgi?board=talk2&action=display&thread=88084&page=1) but am lacking samples in the stabled 24/7 category (and stabled during the day). So if anybody has any connections or ideas I'll be extremely greatful to hear them - if it's possible to send them by post/email that would be fantastic - but I might be able to drop some off if they're local to me in the W Mids. I'm looking to collect some more samples at the start of January and need some people to give them too - thanks for all your help everybody. Ross Copland ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Sue Whitmore on here works for Weatherbys. She might be able to help with some racehorse connections if you PM her. They are mostly stabled 24/7 I think.

Sue Taylors OH trains a few point to pointers and NH horses - you could ask her, she is a vet at Connaught House in Wolverhampton www.connaughtvets.co.uk/, she may possibly be very interested in any findings too.

ask anyone in livery in Essex!!! Mine HAD to be in 24/7 from november to may the last two winters (kept in normal DIY yards in south essex - never again!)
I could do a questionnaire for last winter for each of my horses if that helps? I could pretend it was last year!

Hi Ross,
I have a few connections that might be useful - people from racing backgrounds. If you want to PM me (I am a novice on here and can't work out how to PM you!) I can let you have their details and I will mention it to them.
Cheers, Lynsey

Many racehorses are given turnout for at least an hour a day these days. 23/7 is more realistic for any horse that has grazing available but lives in. However, the horses that *are* kept in 24/7 are police horses, dray horses and cavalary horses, plus the horses at the inner London riding schools. They are given complete rest at grass for several weeks as a holiday. In fact, the home of rest for horses was originally set to give working horses in London a place to have a break. Of course, these may not prove your point, depending on what you are trying to achieve, as they rarely display stereotypic behaviour. They are bred to work, and are worked, hard, daily. They are selected for their equable temperaments and ability just to get on with it.
IMO, racehorses are just about the worst type to extrapolate resuts to the general horse population. They are bred *only* for speed, not for soundness (they only need to win one big race in their lives to become profitable), not conformation nor temperament. So their behaviour is at one extreme end of the range.
Anyway, let me know who you want to be in touch with, I can probably help.

ask anyone in livery in Essex!!! I second that - whilst not impossoble it's hard to find a yard around here that DOESN'T have some form of winter turn-out restriction, from 24/7 all winter to alternate days out (and I'm not including those yards who have daily turnout but in at night). Granted the Essex clay makes for boggy fields, but it rains a heck of a lot more elsewhere! makes me very cross; many yards seem to squeeze in as many liverys as they can to the detriment of the horses, rather than consider setting aside fields specifically for winter use.
