I seem to have started a shift in the power base here, but for the second time I did something on the spur of the moment that worked. Why I don't know?!
We were trying to catch the horses off the high hill to take them down for feeds etc. They were getting silly, and the mare wasn't helping my gelding behave.
After the third gallop past, I ran after Flynn full pelt with my shoulders back and my fists in little balls, head up, eyes blazing. He stopped, snorted and let me reach him at run, both of us screeching to a halt with lots of eye contact. Head down, I put his collar on and lead him down. His expression was one of 'alright, alright, keep your wooly hat on. Only bleedin' kidding!'
Weird.
Then having them down in the lower paddock I went to put a collar on the mare to make bringing them in later a bit easier when it's dark.
He really thought about herding her. I stopped as he reached withing a foot of her backside ready for the bite on her quarters. Our eyes met, I squared up again and questioned his parentage. He dropped his head and stood like a lamb while I collared her. Once I left, he herded her on.
I felt a real wave of respect hit me tonight when that horse looked at me. Great feeling. As good as a riding plus.
This stuff is just amazing. My OH doesn't get how interesting it all is, even after all these years. Charlie just doesn't get how fascinating it is.
I noticed tonight how exciting the mare finds his 'stallion styling.' When he's pratting around herding her on, throwing shapes, she's so enthralled. There's real enjoyment there.
The planting at the stable door (such a pain) has completely stopped. No issues whatsoever having settled it in a deep growl a few days back.
