Thinking about the New Year and moving forward rather than staying stuck,(I know, a bit early but...) But having heard about hypnosis on the radio today, and a friends good experience, thought i may give it a go for a few insecurites i have about riding now and then. I would love to know if anyone has tried it and did it work or not etc. thanks

Yes, had it for needle phobia and it has stopped my panic attacks! Pretty amazing. The only thing I have to tackle now is an apparent vasovagal episode when I have more than a small amount of blood drawn I *will* beat this needle phobia completely one day, lol!

Hi. I would recommend hypnotherapy but I would recommend it even more when combined with NLP. If you can find a practitioner who is trained in both then that's a positive. It shouldn't be too hard to find someone with both training as they are very similar and practitioners often combine the two therapies.
I am trained in both and also a counsellor and feel that for fear, lack of confidence, etc hypnotherapy can be very useful. Always check the credentials of someone you are going to see and if possible get a word of mouth recommendation.
I have used the cd's for improving confidence in riding from sharon shinwell, off the internet, and found them really helpful.
The other thing that helped me with insecurity/lack of confidence was having lessons with a Mary Wanless instructor. Out of everything that has been the most useful for my confidence.
Good luck.

I had it too! I lost my confidence after a bad fall, it did work. Haven't ridden for a while again now tho... (not because of nerves). But it does work!

I used Sharon Shinwell's CDs too. I found them excellent and still use them to relax every now and then.

I had hypnosis to stop smoking after having smoked for 29years it worked. I was a little anxious about 'going under' as i didn't know what to expect. It isn't actually like that at all. I was asked to close my eyes and i was made to feel calm and relaxed. The 'councillor' talked to me about what i had previously discussed with her about my worries re; smoking. In my mind i was drifting through a coral full of wonderful colours BUT i remember thinking to myself 'i can open my eyes and be in control of this at anytime i want to'. I then felt a huge sob go right through my body and come out of my mouth and i was tearful (both my parents died through smoke related illnesses). Afterwards i felt relaxed, but was thinking to myself that it hadn't worked because i wanted a cigarette.! The difference was that is didn't have a cigarette! ;D Try it and see.

Can really recommend the Sharon Shinwell tapes for confident riding (a lot cheaper than going for sessions too)
Also tried hypnosis cos I couldn't pass my driving test - that worked too (6th attempt!). I've heard it doesn't work for everyone but does for most people. I think it's great

I had two sessions with a hypnotherapist when I lost my confidence riding. The result was amazing and I've never looked back. Only advice I can give is to be very careful who you see - lots of people practising but not all qualified. When I've got some spare money I might go for another session not for any specific reason but I felt I benefitted so much. My hypnotherapist taught me coping strategies and breathing techniques which really do work.

Thanks for all your replies, much appreciated. The person i intend to use is both hypnotherapist and NLP person, and i am making an appointment for early in the new year! This will be my year of moving forward instead of staying stuck (in mud, of which i have a lot!) ;D

I actually qualified as a hypnotherapist many years ago! Also have studied NLP. Sorry for the shameless plug but you may find my book 'Perfect Confidence' helpful (I've had some lovely reviews) - we also stock Sharon Shinwell CDs. It's lovely to have help from someone but remember the power is within You to change (just what the good witch Glenda told Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz!) Think about what you say when you talk to yourself ... Good Luck Kelly

Kelly, thankyou for replying to my post. I know a lot of lifes answers are to be found within, but I have talked myself into a corner that i need help getting out of. That is what I am looking for with this. The frustration of me holding myself back has finally got to me, and i do not have my younger years on my side anymore so am going to see a man that i hope, can! I have all your books and have also been on your Perfect Manners course, which i found fantastic and loved every minute and I know from that, that I need a physical kick from someone independant to get me going and then i'm ok. As they say, life is a minestrone! thanks again, Sarah

Hypnotherapy is good but I do find it short term, whereas NLP actually 'rewires' your brain, so you don't have irrational fears. You can visualise yourself doing almost anything, and your subconcious actually starts to believe it! You will learn such techniques as seeing yourself riding confidently, enjoying it and feeling it, and if any bad images come into your mind you shrink them into a tiny insignificant picture. Sounds silly, but you do basically convince your own mind. Good luck!!
