Could anyone please give me any advice. My beautiful horse has been lame for a few weeks now and after 3 vet visits it is thought that he has sacriliac pain. my vet wnats him to go to newmarket to see sue dyson and have a scintigraphy scan but although i want the best for him my insurance say they will only pay out under certain conditions and i couldnt afford the bill myself. So i have had my chiropractor look at him today and she agrees that he has pain in this area she has treated him today and is comming back tuesday to see if he is any better. But i have told the prognosis is not good with this type of injury as it is very hard to get to. Has anyone else had any dealings with this and what was the outcome . I use my horse mainly for dressage.

A freind of mine has gone through exactly the same thing very recently with her 16.2 cleveland bay, he went to newmarket but the scans didnt show up any hotspots, so she's now back to the drawing board....he finds it very diffucult to pick up one of his back legs for any length of time and when ridden he crosses one of his hind legs under him which is what led the vets to believe it was his sacrialic joint. I think he's something like 7/10ths lame? They did say tho that if the cause was coming from the sacriallic joint this was not a good prognosis ridden wise for him which is what you have also been told. My friend was told about a new drug that could have been used (if that was the area of pain) but its so brand new its only been tested in europe apparently and so my freinds horse was going to be a guinnea pig. Cant you find out what the "certain conditions" are from your insurance? If they will pay out its worth getting it done just to rule this out.

Thanks sunnylynn my vet is pretty sure it is his sacriliac joint and my chiropractor thinks the same. If i go to newmarket and the scan doesnt show any hotspots etc then they wont pay out have that in writing i am with SEIB and i have vets bill cover up to £5000 so i feel very let down. Did your friend see sue dyson i have been told she is an expert in this area

I sent a horse to Newmarket to see Sue Dyson some years ago. She went because of another problem but was slightly lame on arrival so Sue did a bone scan which showed a hotspot on the sacroiliac joint. She then went sound and we never got to the bottom of it, eventually sold her to do another job as her original problem was tying up and this came down to excitement when doing endurance. The sacro-iliac thing has never affected her and she went on to do dressage.

My friend has an Andalusian broodmare that has this problem. She got the mare very cheap as she has been rehabilitated, put back into work only for it to happen again. Apparently she is ok to carry a foal but not to be ridden. Heather knows about this type of injury I believe, perhaps you could pm her?

My TB fractured his Sacral Vertebrae. He has since had 2 scintigraphy scans and the bone has healed. His muscles became very tense. I have an excellant physio by the name of Nicky. He did it in March and may now be rideable after xmas. It has been a long old slog of long lining and lunging and i lead him from my mums horse. He might be able to jump but he doesnt like it anyway.
A friend of mine had a TB who hurt his muscles. She brought him back into work slowly. He is fine now but if he cant be ridden for some reason she brings him back into work slowly.
It is different for every horse but there is hope so keep your chin up. If you need a chat PM me.
Good Luck

My horse has a sprained sacro ileac and my vet has advised against chiro/physio for the moment as the muscles need to be rested. She is currently on sachets of danelon (anti inflammatory and pain releif which is more palatable than bute). She is sound though, unlike your horse. When the insurance said they would only pay out under certain circumstances, did they elaborate on what the circumstances are? Just sounds a bit odd tbh as an injury is an injury

thankyou for all your replys. I am just praying that my boy comes good it would be such a shame if we couldnt do our dressage anymore i only just started and was so proud of him he got 73 percent last time out then 5 days later he was unlevel. I put him under the solarium tonight in hope that it may help. He wasnt to keen gets a bit bolshy when he not in work bless him
