For the second time in a week my lad has come up in lumps mostly where his rug sits. The vet gave him a steroid injection as she thought it might be something he had eaten and left me one to give him in a couple of days if needed, which he didn't.Then yesterday morning they came up again but this time there were some on his neck, so we gave the second one last night and this morning they are gone again. Any ideas?

Could they be feed related? Have you changed anything lately?

Our vet seldom gives steroid injections because of the risk of laminitis. It's often really difficult to find out the cause of lumps and bumps though. Could he be too hot? The weather has been milder recently so maybe he's sweating. Some feeds can bring them out in lumps. We've had one that was allergic to sugar beet and came up in lumps.

Do they come up only when he comes in?

The first time was when I brought him in from the field but the second was first thing in the morning, which weren't so obvious but worse later that day. I've changed his feed and left his rug off and so far no sign of lumps.I haven't clipped him this year due to lack of time to ride so I'm hoping it's just him getting a bit warm. Apart from what he may of eaten the vet has suggested it might be his liver. He's 17

Are they big lumps or small pimply type lumps that go scaby?

They are all different in size and more of a flatter lump, if that makes sense. They don't have a head and the hair is raised where they are. Thanks

Sounds like a hives type allergy to something then. These things are often a mystery and usually go away of their own accord so fingers crossed.
