Most of the mineral forms are 70% absorbed according to research - so quite good rates.

I've got a load of Jackie's Mag Ox in my feed bin if anyone would like it for free - My gelding wouldn't touch it even though it is fairly odourless and tasteless and he eats ANYTHING!! I am guessing there must be around a kilo of it. I will check to see if it's still OK and dry (not had it that long, earlier in the year) and if so, happy to send it out. Won't be until after Christmas though

Is feed grade dolomite an OK source? How much would be absorbed? Obviously a far lower amount, but this area is calcium defficient too, so many people supplement for both.
According to manufacturers, this Dolmote comprises of the following - I suppose that means that there's only 10% total Mag:
Calcium Carbonate 59% Magnesium Carbonate 35%
Calcium 24% Magnesium 10%

Op I do like the fact you question everything instead of just accepting it, which is how it should be. Dan used to be on cal mag as we suspected magnesium deficiency but when he was with Jo, even though he went with his cal mag, he got worse with her rich grazing and she had him blood tested showing he was still magnesium deficient. Magnesium oxide seems to be the one he does best on and he most calm. He however does require more than most horses seem to need

started Rio on CalMag last night, no issues with eating it but no real surprise as she's a greedy one anyhow.
How long does it take to start taking effect? I'm used to herbal treatments requiring a months use is it similar with minerals?

I think questioning things like magnesium use is a good thing There's far too many claims like most horses being deficient and feed plenty because its harmless anyway floating about IMO. I think it can be an useful supplement for some horses that are actually deficient but I'm pretty sure mine aren't and it did more harm than good.
