I've heard good things re. Aloe Vera for healing, and had success with honey myself. Would sugar and water be just as good honey though? Both will cause granulation which is what we're looking for in most wounds (within reason). Sorry 4 dragging up an old thread, but hadnt really looked at the hall of fame until today. My experience with honey and the sugar thing was at my work placement last summer at local vets. A car was in RTA and they used Manuka honey on open wound, the healing was much quicker and it worked wonders. Also had a german shephard in that had been bitten on the throat by another dog and had left a big open gash, the owner had been to another vet, who hadnt even bothered to remove the hair that was poking into the wound etc, to keep dirt out, and had said to pack it with sugar. it was a disguisting mess, and the sugar was giving any bacteria even more 'food' to eat. Manuka honey, although yes it is sugary, has other components which aid with the healing, and getting rid of bacteria. May not always be the case, but thought this experience might be useful. (in the end the dog was sedated, area clipped and cleaned, dead manky tissue removed and stitched. the wound was too big and nasty to be left open to the elements. dont think they will be returning to the first vet again)
